January 17, 20242 yr I've replaced a few disks, cables, I'm at my wits end with this thing. I can't figure it out. It seems that all is fine and dandy until we get to Parity Sync day (monthly). Disks start having errors at that point and then fall offline. I'm currently in 2 "Failed" disks state and have 2 parity disks in the array doing their thing currently. I have another theory that it could be my PSU/cabling setup. I have breakout cables going from 1 SATA plug to 4 disks x2. 8 3.5 SATA disks with breakouts on 2 cables, but I read somewhere that someone chased this for quite a while and found something with the PSU rails having all the SATA connectors on the same rail and it just couldn't keep up. Something to the tune of that. Anyone have any ideas? Diags attached. I've been replacing random disks for this reason since I started this whole shebang a few months ago. I bought a handful of spares "just in case" and i've used every damn one of them. There's no way ALL of these disks had errors right? I put 4 of them in my Synology and they're just cranking away no problem. The same 4 i've pulled out of this unraid box that had "errors." SMART tests appear to all pass too. I also found out the hard way not to upgrade to 6.12.6, i'm back on 6.12.4 and remembered to read the release notes before upgrading going forward. nasty-diagnostics-20240117-1621.zip Edited January 17, 20242 yr by bimmerd00d
January 18, 20242 yr Community Expert It does look like a controller issue, and the symptoms are similar to a known issue with the Adaptec kernel driver for that controller, but 6.12.4 should not be affected, only 6.12.5+, so that's strange.
January 18, 20242 yr Author Solution I went ahead and guessed that it might be that or the PSU. I overnighted a 750w PSU (better than the delta 550 I had), and a Dell H200 in IT mode. Installed it this morning and so far it's rebuilding the 2 "failed" disks. Also, i'm seeing about 30MB/s more write speed too. In the end, new PSU, HBA, and cables. Fingers crossed!
January 30, 20242 yr Author Rebuild completed successfully. System has been running without a hiccup since the HBA and PSU replacement. If anyone finds this later. I was having phantom disk errors/failures. I'm awaiting the next parity sync which is when it would fail. I did add a Noctua 40mm fan to the H200 as well that I moved from the old HBA. They want some flow.
