inconsistent speed when writing data to external hdd

Featured Replies

Hello, I'm new to Unraid and hopefully my issue is not too dumb.

I started an Unraid server using my mom's old laptop, and the array is made of the internal HDD and an external HDD (Seagate_Backup_Plus_Drive) via usb3 port. I have around 6TB of media data that I need to import into the external HDD.

I tried two methods:

1. Connecting the data drive (NTFS) to a Windows 11 laptop and upload the data to the share over WIFI, I got maximal 10MB/s but it dropped to 0 after a few minutes. I also tried copying data directly from the internal SSD of the laptop and encountered the same issue.

2. After some googling, I mounted the data drive as an unassigned device to the server via usb3 port and started data migration using binhex-Krusader. I got maximal 100-150MB/s but the speed usually dropped to less than 1MB/s or even nearly 0 after a few minutes. The over 100MB/s speed would re-appear every 10+ minutes lasting for 1-2 minutes.

In netdata I got high System CPU iowait time and Disk sda utilization (sda is the external HDD used in the array) warning. And the iowait is consistently over 50% CPU utilization.

Diagnostic data is attached. Thanks for any help in advanced.

Retest copying to just disk1 and then disk2, disk2 is SMR so write performance degradation is expected.
