Mac Mini Quad I7 Storage server?

Featured Replies

Only a storage geek or a person with hardware OCD would even consider what we talked about at work today.

We were talking about adding another 40 drive low impact storage unit at work today. (to replace a backup tape array)

somehow we actually pondered a really strange idea, and then we realized it could "almost" be done.

Someone said "cant we use one of those demo mac mini servers we got in the storeroom and the thunderbolt port to run the array?"

.... say what?

we have 2 mac mini quadcore I7's in the store room? fun!

we actually pondered it... for almost an hour..

we looked at the rack kit  and then we looked at the thunderbolt specs.

after kicking it around...

we decided the single gigabit port and  8 gigs of non ecc ram would be the downfall.. that and we are assuming there are 2008r2 drivers for the mini since we would have to install non-OSX  server on it.

maybe if there is a thunderbolt NIC out.

we were going to order the arrays anyways so why not try it? ... we have the mac just sitting there.

It does not look like the rackmount is for sale yet so who knows if we will try it.

I just thought it was funny we even considered it..

the mini is nice hardware... but i dont think it would survive as a head for a SANS box for to long..
