UNRaid Server Randomly Loses Network Access (I Think) Until Hard Reset (v6.12.6)

Featured Replies

This has happened twice now in the last 24 hours and I feel it is likely to keep occurring.

  • Nothing of note is going on when the system loses connection.  The first time a movie was being watched on Plex and the second time was in the middle of the night with nothing going on.
  • At the point of failure the system appears to lose connection to the network.
    • Typing in UNRaid’s IP address on another computer’s browser gets an error that the server is unreachable.
    • All services provided are unavailable (Plex, VMs, etc.)
    • Network switch shows zero traffic going through the port.
    • When using the terminal via a keyboard/monitor plugged directly into the server I tried pinging Google (8.8.8.8) and it will not do anything.
  • It appears the power to the server is fine.  It is on a battery backup, the power draw is as expected (~200 W), and the terminal is available.
  • I do not know what to do other than a hard power reset to reboot.  When I do that, everything boots up perfectly and is working.  But then it crashes after.  Also, it is an unclean reboot.

Any ideas?

Enable the syslog server and post that after the next time it happens.

I enabled.  I will repost when and if it occurs again.

Did this ever happen again to you OP?
Its been happening intermittently to me also, ill try and grab logs next time but its a pain in the ass to fix - cant SSH to cleanly reboot (but can still ping the server curiously) and almost always requires a hard reboot to resolve.

Starting to think its my network controller, which is the Realtek 8111, and it seems to always happen while I'm direct playing from Plex to a browser.

Another curiosity, if I have something like a Plex movie already streaming when it happens, the stream will stay connected and will still play but will be very slow (buffers, but doesnt disconnect).  So it wont accept new connections, but the old ones stay active, which again points to mass packet loss via the network controller.

Op and Wispa, I am having the same issue - have either of you found anything? I Will upload a syslog as soon as I can capture one when it happens.
