Possible Fix for Plex slow performance and 100% CPU Spikes

Featured Replies

I think I was able to identify a solution for those facing performance issues with Plex on Unraid Docker, like sudden CPU spikes and slow performance even with basic tasks like slow Plex menu loading, sluggish collection loading, and inexplicable CPU spikes during direct play cause the CPU usage to soar to nearly 100% for no reason. Despite focusing on Plex Docker, the root cause wasn't Plex itself but Unraid default CPU setting. Following a motherboard replacement, Unraid defaulted to "Power Save" CPU settings, leading to the problem. The issue began after my motherboard died and was replaced with another used motherboard and CPU I had on hand. The CPU wasn't that slow, I know it could handle multiple real-time audio transcoding from 7.1 audio to 5.1 or stereo without struggling, thanks to the Nvidia Quadro M2000 to take care of the video transcoding. I almost purchased another CPU, but then I revisited an old video from "SpaceInvarderOne" that many like me, used to tune up the UNRAID server for the first time years ago. After watching the video again, as soon I got to the 7:30 minute mark, that's where I found the solution to my problem.

It may not be the solution for others, but it will give you a starting point to look for performance issues when using Unraid for the first time with Plex. However, if you're using Unraid solely as a file server without VMs or Dockers, you can leave this feature in Power Save mode.

Solution to enhance Plex Performance:

1. Navigate to Settings in the top menu.

2. Under "User Utilities," Click on "Tips and Tweaks."

3. Under "Power Saving Settings," locate the "Normal CPU Scaling Governor option." By default, it's set to "Power Save", change it to "Performance. and click "Apply"

4. Test your Plex performance after making this adjustment.

Have you encountered a similar issue before, and if so, what was your solution?
