Two NVME drives missing after upgrade and reboot

Featured Replies

Not sure if this was effected by the upgrade but after I upgraded to 6.12.8 two out of my 4 NVME drives appear not to be recognized. All 4 of my NVME drives are mounted through an expansion PCIe card. Both drives that are missing are WD_BLACK_SN770_2TB drives. When I checked the card I can see all 4 lights are enabled to the expansion card, so it appears that they have power to them, but I don't know that if they are completely hosed and need replaced or if there is something else that cause them to go offline after the upgrade:

Feb 20 09:47:57 Tower kernel: nvme nvme0: Device not ready; aborting initialisation, CSTS=0x0
Feb 20 09:47:57 Tower kernel: nvme nvme0: Removing after probe failure status: -19
Feb 20 09:47:57 Tower kernel: nvme nvme1: Device not ready; aborting initialisation, CSTS=0x0

If anyone has any insight, that would be helpful. I just find it strange that two drives would completely bork out after an OS upgrade and reboot. I have a downloaded diagnostics report, but there's quite a bit of files in there, so I'm not sure which one to post up if anyone wanted to take a deeper dive. TIA!

Ok I added that within the Main->Boot->Flash->Syslinux Configuration->Unraid OS:

Rebooted, and still not recognizing the two NVME drives. Anything else I can check or provide?

Try downgrading back to the version you were running to confirm they still work.

I removed the pci=realloc=off and rolled back the OS version and rebooted. Both NVME drives did not come back. I kept the older OS version and added the pci=realloc=off and rebooted and both show as missing still.

I was able to pull a diagnostic report earlier. Let me know if that will help. Otherwise, I'm wondering if those two WD NVME drives are hosed.

If they didn't come back with a known good release it's can be a device problem, you could swap positions with the other two just to try and confirm.

Ok. After doing some reading I'm starting to suspect that the two WD black sn770 are probably failing due to a firmware issue. Looks like I might need to upgrade them. But I don't think I'll be able to do that through Unraid directly since the drives are offline completely. I could pull them and attempt to do that through another machine, but the chances of that working are slim. I've also been reading through some other articles and noticed that the WD NVME drives are extremely problematic. And even after a firmware upgrade, they will end up failing shortly afterwards. So, I bit the bullet and purchased two new Samsung NVME drives to replace the WD ones. Hopefully those will last a little bit longer. I'll keep this post open for now and see if I can try to assess anything else with the WD drives, but it seems like they might be a lost cause.

Ended up going with two new Samsung 990's. Went through the process to update the firmware as well which went smoother than expected. So I guess I just need to steer clear of WD NVME's.
