Backup/Multimedia Server, Hardware Recommendations

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

My current Unraid server works well and I'm satisfied with it, but I'm considering an upgrade to reduce its power consumption. Note that I've primarily used hardware that I already had available.

Usage: backup and multimedia server (Plex).

Current configuration:

Board: Z9PE-D8 WS

CPU: 2x E5-2630v2

GPU: GTX 1080

RAM: 32GB (8x4)

PSU: Enermax Revo 750W

Fan: 7x Noctua 120mm

Array: 7x HDD (8 to 12 TB), used only when necessary, with a 2-hour spin-down

Pool 1: 2x OCZ-TRION 960GB, cache for array, contains appdata and docker.img

Pool 2: 1x Seagate Exos 12TB, data sharing and Kavita

Current optimization:

Script to reduce GPU consumption, currently 15W in idle

Powertop script --auto-tune &>/dev/null

Disabling unnecessary functions including CPU turbo boost from BIOS

This configuration with: array in spin-down, active Pool 1 and 2 plus docker Kavita and qBittorrent+VPN consumes an average of 125W.

New configuration:

Board: ??

CPU: Intel ?? (with iGPU for Plex transcoding, eliminating the GTX 1080)

RAM: ??

PSU: ??

Fan: 7x Noctua 120mm

Array: 7x HDD (expandable with 9305-16i or similar)

Pool 1: 2x OCZ-TRION 960GB

Pool 2: 1x Seagate Exos 12TB

Thanks to everyone for the advice you can give me.
