March 14, 200818 yr Hey all, Let me introduce myself as Tom, I will become more familiar with everyone im sure as i break everything in my first unRaid server. I just baught everything I think i need for my first setup, I'm looking for comments or advice on what I've baught, did I do ok, should I return some parts for others? First off currently at home I have 2x 320gb IDE 2x 200gb IDE 2x 350gb SATA II 2x 500gb SATA II (these are the OS drives in my Vista Gaming and HTPC machines, which i don't want to switch out with the 350gbs, because there is no good ghosting method for vista, if anyone knows a way I can make a ghost image, pull out the HD put in a new one and restore it, with out bootmgr and blue screen errors let me know) And here is what I baught yesterday via newegg and lagoom Flashstick: SanDisk Cruzer Micro U3 1GB Flash Drive (USB2.0 Portable) Motherboard: ASUS P5B-VM DO :: 100% from suggestion on the these boards Processor: Intel Pentium E2180 Allendale 2.0GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor :: 20$ more for a 2.0ghz C2D, i couldnt pass Fan: ZALMAN CNPS9700 LED 110mm 2 Ball CPU Cooler :: Every PC i build has one of these, and my fingers may be perm scarred but i love em Memory: Team Xtreem DARK 1GB (2 x 512MB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit :: 25.00 with good reviews Drives: Western Digital Caviar GP WD10EACS 1TB 5400 to 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive :: figure 1TB parity, 1 for storage, will keep my happy IDE Controller: Rosewill RC-208 PCI IDE (ATA) Silicon Image Host Controller un-RAID Card I have a 4 pata drives, and maybe 1 or 2 more laying around, so I wanted to atleast have 4 IDE for now, this lists unRaid in the title, even though its not on the HW compability list, I hope I can fix it, as I upgrade the system at some point ill replace all the IDE drives with 2 SATA Drives and just swap the controller for a sata controller Case: Thermaltake Armor Series VA8000BWS Black Aluminum / Steel ATX Full Tower Computer Case :: CM Stackers were sold out, will go rackmount at some point i think, but this could in theory hold 16 hotswappable drives (3x 5in3's and a single) plus 6 internal Hotswap: ICY DOCK MB455SPF-B Multi-Bay Backplane Module :: cheapest price for a decent 5in3 Powersupply: CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX ATX12V / EPS12V 650W Power Supply :: I had so many more computer problems through-out my life prior to my deciding that a quality powersupply is worth more than its weight in gold, and people are saying this one is good for unRaid because it has a single 12v rail, i hope thats correct. Well please let me know anything im forgetting, and how I did. Also if anyone wants to start prepping me for the challenge coming im up for it =) Thanks -Ox (Tom)
March 14, 200818 yr Welcome! Powersupply: CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX ATX12V / EPS12V 650W Power Supply :: I had so many more computer problems through-out my life prior to my deciding that a quality powersupply is worth more than its weight in gold, and people are saying this one is good for unRaid because it has a single 12v rail, i hope thats correct. Sounds like hard-earned wisdom...
March 16, 200818 yr I have build 3 machines in the last month. I won't buy anything but those Corsair Power Supplies. They are really durable.Reliable.Quiet. And best of all..... Modular.
March 16, 200818 yr I have build 3 machines in the last month. I won't buy anything but those Corsair Power Supplies. They are really durable.Reliable.Quiet. And best of all..... Modular. I am pretty sure that Corsair does not manufacture power supplies, they market and sell them. Seasonic is the manufacturer of many, if not all, of Corsair's PSUs. Of course, that doesn't mean you can simply find an identical unit, so features and numbers in the Corsair model may indeed be unique. It does add to the "Seasonic is good" statements I keep hearing, however. Bill
March 17, 200818 yr Author Well thanks for the replies so far, so it doesnt look like I made any glaring mistakes which is good to hear. And ya the power supply lesson is always one of the hardest learned. As for this particular corsair its not modular, but thats ok because i have a case the size of a small abrams tank. -Ox --------------------------------- www.frigidhost.com
March 18, 200818 yr I like all your choices. I think you may have got the last P5B-VM DO from lagoom, as they have been discontinued since the 14th. btw - Corsair power supply makers are (according to jonnyguru) as follows: VX450 - Seasonic VX550 - CWT HX520 - Seasonic HX620 - Seasonic TX650 - Seasonic TX750 - CWT http://www.jonnyguru.com//forums/showpost.php?p=31401&postcount=5 I've got the 550vx and am very happy with it and also have a 650tx on order that should arrive any day.
June 8, 200917 yr Rosewill RC-208 PCI IDE (ATA) Silicon Image Host Controller un-RAID Card Holy crap it is actually CALLED "un-raid" http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816132005&nm_mc=OTC-RSS Trademark violation?
June 12, 200917 yr Rosewill RC-208 PCI IDE (ATA) Silicon Image Host Controller un-RAID Card Holy crap it is actually CALLED "un-raid" http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816132005&nm_mc=OTC-RSS Trademark violation? I was under the impression that the "un-Raid" part was a feature listing rather than part of the product name. You see this often on items such as mobos: ASROCK blah-x34 video lan sound: The "Video, lan sound" is not part of the product name. I believe it's just saying that the card works with unRAID - some user must have reviewed it or told NewEgg that it would boost sales if they mentioned it. All speculation, of course; I hate to see unnecessary lawsuits.
June 12, 200917 yr I think it is more likely ignorance on someone's part and they are trying to say "This is not a RAID card".
June 12, 200917 yr I think it is more likely ignorance on someone's part and they are trying to say "This is not a RAID card". IIRC other cards that are RAID capable also labelled as un-Raid as well as the RAID modes they support.
June 13, 200917 yr From what i can tell based on limited research unRAID is not makerked as trademarked or copyrighted term on Lime Tech website. That doesnt mean anything other than it is not listed though. In my experience most small companies place a copyright symbol on some things and hope for the best. Unfortunately this doesnt really mean anything globally.
