March 5, 20242 yr Hello all, and thanks in advance for any advice. I'm relatively new to Unraid (about 9 months) so I've never had to do what I'm planning to implement. I have an 8-bay Unraid server currently housing a single 8TB parity drive and three 8TB data drives. I want to expand my array by adding more, larger drives to eventually take up the entire 8 bays. I have purchased two new 12TB drives. Since I generally use renewed/refurbished drives for Unraid, I would like to upgrade my Parity drive and add a 2nd Parity drive now so that I don't have to worry about it as I expand. So my goal is: Replace current 8TB Parity with first 12TB drive Add second 12TB drive as Parity 2 Add old 8TB Parity drive as new data drive I have read through the manual and perused many posts here about how to replace a parity drive, how to add a second parity drive, and how to add a new data drive. That said, I am looking to do this in the most efficient way possible and it's not really clear to me the exact order in which I should perform these actions. I don't want it to take multiple days to reach a stable state, but at the same time I'm not really enthused about leaving my array exposed without valid parity, even though I do have one full backup (local) and one partial (remote), but I will entertain the idea if it will save me considerable time and effort. I should note that I do plan on preclearing the two 12TB drives at least once before doing anything else so I'm not factoring the time spent on that in my decision. Given the multiple pieces I'm trying to implement at the same time, is there a generally recognized "best" order for these steps? Or is there a "quick" way and a "safe" way and I just have to choose?
