My HDDs dont spin down

Featured Replies

Hey Guys,

for some reason my HDDs never spin down.

I can spin down them manually but they will spin up again after some seconds.

I checked File Activity and Open Files but there is nothing accessing my drives.

VMs are on my SSDs, so that they can run without making any noice.

But even with VMs and Docker completely disabled they dont spin down.

The timing is set to 15min for automaticaly spin down.

I appreciate any help

Thanks

Marcel

Have you tried disabling the docker and VM services to see if the disks then spin down?

Do you have Tirbo Write enabled?   If so writing to any disk would cause all drives to spin up and in the diagnostics something is writing to disk6.

This is covered here in the online documentation accessible via the ‘Manual’ link at the bottom of the GUI or the DOCS link at the top of each forum page. The Unraid OS->Manual section in particular covers most features of the current Unraid release.

Thanks, that was my "problem".

Out of your experience, is there a hugh write speed difference when turning it off?

There can be.

Ideally to get best performance you want things that might otherwise keep disks spun up to be on a SSD pool external to the main Unraid array.

I will probably just use a cronjob to turn it off by night and on by day.

mdcmd set md_write_method [0,1]

should do the trick
