Plex Hardware Recommendations

Recommended Posts

Hello,

New member here.  Goal is to use UNRAID for a new Plex server build.  Current server is 10 yr old Dell Optiplex which needs to be retired.   That server running Ubuntu has been meeting most of my performance needs except for live TV streaming and DVR recording at the same time (using a HD Home Run tuner).   I have two,  2 TB media drives today, a SSD for the OS, and an optical - DVD drive.   Will need another drive bay (in cabinet) for the parity drive, and would like one or two drive expansion capability.    I haven't built a computer in years so need to come up to speed on current technology and options.   Appreciate any thoughts and ideas from the community to get me pointed in the right direction. Thanks!

Just thought I would post my setup that currently runs great for Plex.

Intel i7 13700k - Overkill for plex - just make sure yours has igpu for transcoding.

ASUS PRIME Z690-A

128gb DDR5

Synology NAS - 20 terabytes - with 10gigabit over fiber. Stores all TV/Movie media

The Synology and Unraid server are in different locations (house/detached garage) and serve as duplication for most data and backups.

If you will only be running plex you don't need latest CPU, mb, etc.

Hope it helps.
