recurring disk failure

Featured Replies

Hello everybody,

i would like to get your opinion on my issue.

my server has one array of 8x8To (sata) + 1T cache (M2).
The array is "dispatched" such as:

- 4 connected on motherboard

- 4 connected on additional sata PCI card

disks are seagate, and configuration has been modified to allow high current while spin up after sleep state (i have optimize the setup to be able to get all array sleep while no acces to it).

I have noticed that all disk that are marked as failed are always those connected to the PCI Sata extended card.

i can rebuild the array with no issue.

Asking myself if issue is not related to spin down / spin up as i never face any issue during array parity rebuild ....

Looks more like a controller issue, does the addon controller have just 4 ports or more?

  • Author

Hi,

4 ports (as far as i remember)

this controller :

(04:00.0 SATA controller: ASMedia Technology Inc. ASM1064 Serial ATA Controller (rev 02))

OK, if there are only four ports it doesn't have a SATA port multiplier, those are a known issue, but please double check, since based on the syslog it does look like there is a port multiplier, if there isn't, it could have some defect, since those Asmedia controllers usually work well with Unraid.

hum.... okay.
I will check this point to be sure. In case of 6 ports, should i buy a 4 ports controller to be sure ? (i don't know if ASM1064 support 6 ports)

Please double check, since based on the syslog it does look like there is a port multiplier, for 6 ports you can get an Asmedia 1166 based controller, with just 6 ports, not more.

asmedia 1166 doesn't used port multiplier to get 6 ports ?

No, it's a 6 port controller natively, but there are models with 8 or 10 ports, those will have a PM.

thanks for your support ! i will replace the controller.

hope this will solved the issue?
