Prefilter for system intake

Featured Replies

Two landsharks and a cat mean my house has a bounty of "suspended particles" floating about. The best air cleaners I own are my small fleet of computers. Hate it.

After trying various fabrics to filter things out, most of which clogged quickly and were funky looking, I just found what seems to be good filter media. (This is mostly for the servers since they move so much air/junk.) It's the pre-filter from a Honeywell Air cleaner. One of them is 6" wide and about 40" long. It acts as loops to velcro hooks, so it's easy to attach without drama. The material is about 3/16 thick for good capacity but sponge-like so it doesn't add much resistance. It's black, so the dust is easily visible. Anyway, almost ideal, and I had extras in the attic for years.

This looks like the current iteration of what I'm using:

The ones I'm using pre-date the perforated and aftermarket stuff mentioned in reviews so YMMV.

If you have something you like, share?

Thanks for sharing!  I've also had dust issues with my computers and servers.  I haven't experimented with filters too much, but the best solution I found is simply to get the computer/server up off the floor.  Elevating it even just a foot or two with a small table or shelf will greatly reduce the amount of dust that reaches it.  By elevating my computer and server onto a standard height table, I was able to reduce dust accumulation to the point that I only have to clean out my towers about twice per year (if that).  I also have pets, by the way.
