ubuntuaddicted Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 Hello, I am currently running a p4 system with 4gb ram / sickbeard / sabnzbd / couchpotato with 1 sata drive parity 2tb 3 sata 1.5tb 1 750gb PATA cache drive 750w ps (over kill, but I had it around) Antec 900 case This system is just for home use with very little use (me really) I would like to upgrade to give me more room for drives Here is my list (keeping current case, power supply and drives) https://secure.newegg.com/WishList/MySavedWishDetail.aspx?ID=17911705 Thoughts? Was not sure about the memory.. with prices so cheap is 8gb to much? Thank you David mobile safari won't load that page and I notice it's https, your wish list. Anyway, 8gb is WAY overkill. Many debs have pointed out that 512 mb is plenty for the unRAID footprint. Obviously I notice u r running several adding services but would still say 4GB is plenty. Where u will benefit from more CPU and RAM power is if you're transcoding video files on the unRAID server BUT I am new to unRAID so take what I say w/ a grain of salt. It's my understanding that all the writing of data within unRAID to the drive, then the parity drive etc etc its very inefficient for constantly writing data to unRAID (please a dev correct me). Examples would be constantly writing due to transcoding/encoding video files, constantly writing to the unRAID array with an app like mythtv (tv recordings), and other apps that are always writing data. I digress sorry. Bottom line is I can't see your wish list and all I know is that u want to upgrade to 8gb of ram, I'd say it's not going to be utilized by the unRAID server based on what u r using it for. Good luck PS despite me being totally new to unRAID and currently in the process of building my first URnserver, I am very familiar with Linux and its kernel Tapatalk is tha shizzle
dbrown2 Posted December 5, 2011 Author Posted December 5, 2011 Hello and thank you for your response. I am sorry the list did not work. I updated the original post with a copy of the list
Rajahal Posted December 6, 2011 Posted December 6, 2011 Go for the ECS A885GM-A2. I have tested it personally, and it is fully compatible with unRAID. Makes a great budget board for up to 20 drives. You will not need a separate NIC for this motherboard. With RAM prices as cheap as they are, there's nothing wrong with splurging on 4 or 8 GB of RAM. 2 GB should be your minimum. Also please post the specs for your PSU. Just because it is 750W doesn't mean that it has a strong enough 12V rail to handle multiple hard drives.

Thank you for the reply Rajahal and thank you for your work in supplying system builds and testing. Here is the detail from Newegg. Because I had an issue with the link before.. Johnm Posted December 6, 2011 Posted December 6, 2011 the single rail @ 60 amp will easily allow you to fill that 900 with the maximum of its 15drives with overhead to spare.
Rajahal Posted December 7, 2011 Posted December 7, 2011 Yep, that PSU is well suited for unRAID. Looks like you're ready to order!
