Facepalm (In case you need a laugh)

I've worked in IT for over 10 years, so even though I'm a complete unRAID newbie, I know my way around a PC.

So, tonight I'm copying over my 700GB TV/movie collection to my brand new unRAID server, chest still welling with pride over how well my first real foray into Linux is turning out.

...Then I notice my transfer speeds: 10 MB/s. Max.

Now, I know enough about networking to know that I should be well into the 20's or even 30's copying data from my Win7 PC to the unRAID, especially since I haven't added a parity drive yet. I checked the "Ethernet info" tab on unMENU and noticed that my "Supported link modes" included 1000baseT/Full (yay!), but my speed was only 100Mb/s (boo!).

I spent the last few hours running line tests on all of the CAT6 that I pulled in my house, from my office through the walls to my patch panel and down to the router. Everything was fine. I started digging through forums looking for similar issues with my motherboard: nothing. Then, in desperation, I went to my router manufacturer's site to see if there could be a firmware upgrade. Then I saw it:

Linksys E1000

• 2.4 GHz Band for wireless access

• Guest Access to the Internet and not your private information

• Fast Ethernet (10/100 Mbps) Ports to connect wired devices to the network

Whoops.

Thankfully, Newegg has Rosewill 8-port 1000mbps switches on sale...

The very first thing I learned after getting my unraid running was the difference between fast ethernet and gigabit.

Oh, I know the difference, I just assumed my newish (albeit cheap) Linksys router had gigabit ports. Oh well, having an 8-port gigabit switch will be nice. With two day shipping, it should be here right around the time my file copy finishes  >:(

well imagine my surprise when I wen hunting through my collection of hubs and switches (about 10 of various mfg) to NOT find any gigabit capable  at all. I knew that most of them are 10/100 but I was sure I had at least one gigabit. (it said fast network in big letters on it.) but it was 10/100 as all other.

so to the nearest Microcenter I went and hot me  1 8 port and one 5 port green switch on sale :-)

I need 2, BC one is for main routing of  the house(in the basement) and one to hook up my main PC, printer, laptop when docked at the desk and my wireless AP. all of them are at my desk

PS> I still have my HTPC using its internal NIC @ 100Mb going into new gigabit switch

and yet it looks like it is enough.  I was able to rip full DVD directly onto unRaid with parity

and stream a movie from unRiad back to HTPC with no issues.

Do a test with Teracopy in test mode and/or do a test with md5sum to insure everything is 100%.

Hi Weebo, I will do that some time soon, but I am pretty sure everything is ok

I Ripped the DVD to unRaid from my HTPC directly over  100Mb connection ,

then Made a DVD disk out of it using ImageBurn from my Main PC over gigabit connection.

all is working, no loss or anything, and it is a double Layer DVD (6.4 GB)

Teracopy in test mode is your friend. ;-)

It copies, makes a CRC and reads back the copy, compares the CRC.

It actually alerted me that something was wrong with a wireless card in one of my laptops.
