Upgrade Intel 12th Gen to 14th Gen - HW Transcode stopped working.

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have spent the last few days searching here, looking on youtube/google & I have found nothing in regard to trying to get this problem resolved. I just recently upgraded my server from 12th gen prebuilt NAS(TerraMaster F4-424) to a custom build. I ended up going with the 14500 as my CPU.

The problem is, Unraid and Plex seem to not be communicating the right iGPU through to the docker container, which has also led to transcoding not working anymore. I do have the intel TOP and GPU statics setup, but they both report the older Alderlake GPU that was in the Terramaster.

I am wondering how I go about getting Unraid to report the newer Raptor Lake iGPU. Do I need to do a new config and start from there? Or should I delete the files out of /dev/dri/?

Thanks in advance!

Hi All,

Following up on this, I am curious if somehow my unraid configuration files are not correct. Still struggling to go transcoding working right, but i have been poking around on the server and noticed in my devices it keeps listing the previous iGPU from my last build... I attached a screenshot, I feel like that should be the case, but trying to find other 14thgen build info posts is proving hard to come by.

I just find it weird that everything else is showing Raptor Lake, except for the VGA on line 2.

I will give this a try tonight! Thanks for responding.

Would this have any effect on how Unraidnis reading my iGPU? Like I posted, it keeps showing 12th Gen Alder Lake for my 14th gen Raptor Lake on hardware info.

I feel like I need to do something to get unraid to refresh its hardware IDs.

I think the gpu reports as alderlake as it is the same uhd770 built for alderlake and is used in raptor lake

Thanks for responding. I have been having a hard time finding any hard evidence of it still reporting Alderlake for the 14500.

Have a look here it is in German but they report the same. Maybe fixed in kernel updates but suspect not.

Did you ever figure this out? Mine is also reporting as Alderlake and I have terrible performance if encoding with QSV

Hey,

So I think from the research I did after my post, it really is an AlderLake iGPU and you dont really need it to read raptor lake on the 14500, beacuse it isn't the actually the updated iGPU that came on the higher end chips, IE 14600 and above.

I have the 14600 and I'm having a hella hard time figuring this out... The only thing I can get to report on the gpu_top dashboard is that one process is running but no usage is being indicated for the igpu.... I'm honestly lost. Wondering if anyone has figured out how transcode for 14600

Did you ever figure out this issue? I have 14600 but for whatever reason it just will not transcode with my igpu. Gpu top installed, gpu stats installed, added /dev/dri to Plex... /dev/dri path reports card0 and renderD128 (both of which I've tried pointing to directly to no avail) .. Cannot get this to work at all. Using hotio docker container for Plex. Sighhh

Going to quote myself because apparently after installing the "experimental" Intel i915 SR-IOV plugin , everything just seems to work now. Let me just say, I would suggest researching this plugin more before randomly installing like I did. It worked for me, but I've yet to see if/any weird side effects occur because of this. I have no idea why it worked but it did in my case. I'm going to go research this more now. May come back and update if I understand what the heck just happened. Cheers

So I've made some progress.. not sure if anyone will follow this post but I'm sure in the future someone will experience the same or similar problem and come looking. After a few days of tinkering and experimenting I think I figured it out.. It wasnt the SR-IOV plugin that (directly) fixed the issue (although it did while I had it installed)... I ended up uninstalling the SR-IOV plugin and lost the ability to transcode yet again . While poking around over at the /dev/dri path (where card0 and renderD128 devices live), I noticed that the user:group was root:video. So I first attempted to add plex as a user of the video group but DUH there is no Plex user. The default is 'nobody'. So I added nobody to the video group and bam, no more transcoding issues. I have no idea why the default 'nobody' was not part of this group (maybe it never needed to be originally or something changed). Either way, that fixed the issue. Here's the command if anyone wants to give a try....

gpasswd -a nobody video

For reference: I use 14600 , igpu=UHD770, unraid 7.1.3, hotio-plex
