December 11, 201114 yr I have built my server using a Fractal R3 case. Beautiful case, well built and all that jazz but I have just had a bespoke A/V cabinet made and I messed up with the measurements and now the Fractal doesn't fit in just right. Has anybody ever seen/can recommend a cube chassis with 6-10 3.5" bays? I quite like the fractal array but it doesn't support micro atx boards (I have an Asus m4a78lt-m and would like to reuse it). The case is going to go inside a closed cabinet so appearance won't be too much of an issue.
December 11, 201114 yr Perhaps you should give us the measurements you need to work with? thee are some lan-li cases that can hold about 8 drives that are shorter, but wider. if the cause is completely hidden.. you could always build a case from metal or wood that fits the opening.. just use some prefabbed 5-in-3's for the drive caddies or drive brackets from old used cases.. looks would not be so important, just functional.
December 11, 201114 yr Author I thought about building a custom chassis but I figure that after buying the materials, getting it all powder coated, cage drives and my time it would work out cheaper to just buy a case. The internal dimensions of the cabinet are 500x400x500 (wxhxd measurements in mm). The r3 is about 50mm too tall.
December 11, 201114 yr you should be able to get an antec 300 into that spot. its not pretty but it can hold 11 with a 5in3 added the Prominent 9 is a nice case and fits HxD .. but it's to deep .. Size case: 508(D)x207(W)x479.3(H)mm sticking to the CUBE idea.. this is an old boy, but would fit. the YeongYang YY-0221
December 12, 201114 yr Author I have to say i like the yeongyang case. I think i am going to see if i can track one down. Thanks buddy.
December 12, 201114 yr no problem! That case is an antique at this point, but still one of a kind and has some usefull life with slight mods. they can still be found New. i have seen some used on craigs list for only a few bucks used recently in my area. I'd love to see some photos once you have the build done... Server pr0n!
