May 7, 20242 yr I am traveling internationally away from my machine and just got a notification that my USB flash drive is failed and has gone read only. Everything needed is backed up (usb to unraid connect and locally) and services I need seem to be working. Can I leave it in this state for 3 weeks? About 6 months ago, had same error and Chkdsk on Windows fixed a bad sector or two…should have swapped it then. I have syslog writing to an external location…not sure if anything writes to flash.
May 7, 20242 yr Community Expert Solution I have two very simple Unraid setups--- Basically a NAS with a couple of Dockers on each and a few plugins installed. I am getting about 30 writes per day to the boot drive with about 400 reads per day from it on both servers. I hope you have a current backup of the boot drive. You can do this from the webGUI if you have access to it. If the server is working, I would just continue to use it. But do not apply any updates to the server, plugins, Dockers or VMs until after you have fixed the issues from the boot drive. You will probably have a parity rebuild when you reboot/restart the server because Unraid can't update the 'flag' on the boot drive that says the server did a clean shutdown. So be prepared for that!
May 8, 20242 yr Author Thank you for your response, Frank1940! So far so good - all seems to still be working appropriately. My alternatives are a remote reboot (which sometimes can hang) and I also have a plug I can do remotely for a forced reboot, but I am hoping to just leave it and deal with it when I get back. I did turn off my auto docker and plugin updates thru the CA backup app. I’ll update this post for future searchers to confirm it’s ok. Edited May 8, 20242 yr by gregtamaki

I would be very reluctant to do a reboot. If the flash drive itself has a real problem, there is a very good chance that your server will not be able to boot up!
May 22, 20242 yr Author Update - The server worked fine with the flash drive in read only mode for a couple weeks. Yesterday, I did have a lockup (unrelated, I think, bc macvlan was mentioned in the logs and I had been putting off changing that…) so chose to do a hard restart using the smart plug. I had my bios set to auto power on after power returned and it booted fine. About 24 hours later, I did get another notification my flash drive had an error and is again in read-only mode. So hopefully it will continue to work until I return in a few days.
