August 15, 200619 yr Tom, OK so it looks like your doing a fair job recently at responding to posts which is good but in my view that's only 1/2 (or less) of the support your end users need from you. There is a monster laundry list of features and/or enhancements that I will not re-state here, you know them all. You have many times told us that these were all coming soon but many months later there has been nothing. The only software updates have been bug fixes for the most part. Thoughts....?
August 15, 200619 yr I agree with rharvey, but I personally have not been waiting as long as many of the first adapters to UnRaid. Currently my server is up and running and I am very happy with it. There are two things that I really want, security and updates of the status of the server. I know Joe L. created that script, but I would really enjoy it being built into the software. It is great to see that Tom is back and supporting his product! Hopefully be is working on rolling out full support for SATA and adding in a lot of our wanted features.

Those 2 things are my major gripes also. The security aspect is a big deal because I dont want anything being deleted by accident. Performance increase of dual read/writes would be nice also.
August 16, 200619 yr I would think as soon as he has it ported over to 2.6 these requests will come along rather quickly...from a programming point of view I'm sure tom wants the upgrade to be completely bug free and with the last bug I'm sure he'll be testing the system even more this time. I'd rather wait a few extra months and have a stable unraid than something that might not be a 100% solution. BTW my unraid has up for over 2 months with no problems and several parity checks
August 20, 200619 yr Author Kinda bothers me that this was posted here 5 days ago and Tom has yet to respond.
August 21, 200619 yr A timeframe would just be nice. So people have some clue what is going on. For some usefull enhancements (security, FTP, etc) I would even pay a small fee for the upgrade.
August 23, 200619 yr Tom's alive and working. I corresponded with him on email today about my SATA problem. If I understood him correctly we're going to see a major release rather soon, not sure about any details, except SATA will be in far better shape.

If this is true great, but why would Tom choose to keep us all in the dark as he has. I looked he is on this forum daily so it's not that he has not noticed this post.
August 28, 200619 yr Author Well another week has passed and it's been over two weeks since this thread was started and Tom has not responded. I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for the next release. What is most frustrating is that some of the so called enhancements are actually correcting problems with the code such as read/write performance, clearly not an enhancement but a defect. I have a nearby windows machine with 2 drives in it and I can rip a DVD and watch a DVD from it with zero issues, I can actually use the same drive and it still works fine so performance is atainable but not in the current UnRaid code. However my main pet peeve is the consistent lack of communication..........! By the way, one last thing, the DMA error issue is NOT gone in the newest release at all, I have a 250GB driver that works just fine in a windows machine but causes the UnRaid to lock up attempting to run a parity with that drive installed. Looking at the syslog it's the same exact error as we have always had. So one more time here is my hot list: Let start with bugs and/or issues with the current build: 1. Ability to both read and write at the same time, this performance issue is a big one for me. 2. OS has major issues with DMA drive errors often causing the box to freeze up. 3. Log files are not written in a location where they can be viewed after a system crash so there is no audit trail on system failures 4. System goes un-responsive every once in a while with no warning, only a re-boot can get it back (see #3 above) 5. Flash drive often lost or not set as boot device on re-boot 6. Flash drive is not proving to be very reliable overall 7. Only disk adds (into empty slot) seems to be consistent with what is expected. Replacement of devective drives or upgrades to larger drives is not consistent at all. (may be corrected in last release) 8. Overall errors on boot-up (like EIP errors) that come and go with no rhyme or reason. Boot once get an EIP error and the system locks-up, re-boot right away and it comes up fine. Now onto Fixes and Enhancements: 1. SATA support with spindown 2. Security, better yet user configurable security 3. Ease of data transfer from non-Linux disks 4. Given the several flash issues we have seen a safe and secure way to have a backup or some other fallback plan. In the current configuration if the flash fails the only option is to contact Lime and have a new one sent. Even with instant response there will be downtime involved.
August 28, 200619 yr Just as an FYI: I had an issue all last week and I was really hoping Tom would jump on my thread and try to help. I even sent an emial to Tom with a link to the thread.... looks like he is MIA again

I even sent an emial to Tom with a link to the thread.... looks like he is MIA again Last time he was on this forum was Wednesday of last week....! Prior to that it was looking like he was on daily, not always responding as this thread proves but at least he was on. I think the fact that short of the recent huge bug fix there has been ZERO done to the code in several months would suggest his interest in this product remains very low. Remember he promised an upgrade to address performance back in March.

Remember he promised an upgrade to address performance back in March. Far from it! Sorry about the seeming inactivity - a new release is imminent. Features include: Full SATA support (finally) Power managment: Wake-on-Lan, functional power switch, etc. A couple misc. bug fixes Obviously the biggie here is SATA. The release will also include "preliminary" support for merging all disk shares into a set of "user shares". This is actually a really cool feature, best explained through example. Suppose you have three data disks with the following top-level directory structures: disk1: /Movies disk2: /Movies /Photos disk3: /Movies /Backup Given this structure, UnRaid will automatically generate these shares: Movies Photos Backup If you navigate into the Movies share, you will see a "composite" of all the entries in each of the disk1, disk2 and disk3 Movies directories as if it were one large file system - yet each disk is still it's own file system. Only one problem: these shares are read-only; but there is a button in the Management Utility to "re-scan". The code to implement writing is still under development, but I thought it would be very useful nevertheless to release the read-only version.

Any idea on the timing of the new release? SATA is a great feature. I have so many IDE drives I will just stick with them for now, but this is great for expanding. The merging of the disk names is exactly what I wanted. The read only part is fine for me, because this is mostly used from my TV. On my pc I can pick which disk to use until the feature has been fine tuned. Any idea when security will be implemented? For me I just need a way to protect the data in case of an accidental deletion from someone other then me.
August 30, 200619 yr Author Tom, Good to hear from you and nice to see that a new release is due soon, however other than SATA support there is not much of the long list and overdue requested enhancements or fixes. Where is security, where is performance, where is data migration simplicity...? Sorry to be so bold but these are at the top of most of our lists and you seem to simply ignore them. As you know I have several customers that had been interested in this product but because these (and other) requested features have never been addressed I had to seek other solutions for them all. Like I said above you promised a fix to the HUGE read/write performance issue back last March and yet there is no mention of it in you post today. Call me a prick if you like and I for one have no grounds to complain (as you know) but I had high hopes for this product and even with the enhancements you noted above it still falls short in my opinion. I know there are users out there that are very happy with the system overall, but most of these users don't actively use the system as some of us do. I'm always doing something with my system and keep bumping into the same issues all the time, like the old DMA timer expire issue where the system locks right up, still there despite your thoughts that the newer kernel would solve it. Just my 2 worthless cents and as always I could be wrong.
August 30, 200619 yr With full SATA support, can we mix and match SATA and IDE drive on one system? I know that I have a few SATA drives in one of my systems and I always hoped that I would be able to combine the two! Security is still a much needed feature and is at the TOP of my list. I am always worried that my wife might accidentally press the wrong button while saving digital pictures to the server I do however love the idea of the merging of /dir into one. This will help me out a lot because I store lots and lots of Phish DVDs which span across the array. So I am excited for this feature! Thank you, Mike

In a round-about way, this gives me all teh security I need if \\Tower\Movies is read-only, yet \\tower\disk2\Movies is writeable, I just won't map the latter on any family PC's to avoid detuction by the rugrats. But goodness Tom, please confirm \\tower\disk2\Movies is writeable in your scenario.

The SATA drive spins 24x7 and you don't get temps.

But goodness Tom, please confirm \\tower\disk2\Movies is writeable in your scenario. That's right, \\tower\movies is read-only, but \\tower\disk1 (and all other disk shares) are read/write. Actually the release includes these features: Able to set the disk shares as: - don't export - exported read/write - exported read/write, hidden - exported read-only - exported read-only, hidden "Hidden" means hidden from My Network Places. Also able to set the 'flash' share to one of the above 5 modes, and the 'user shares' to "export", "export read-only", or "export read-only, hidden". While on the subject.... You *should* be able to right-click a share directory, eg, \\tower\disk1\movies, click the read-only attribute off/on and windows will ask if you want to apply changes to this directory only, or to all subdirectories and files. Seems to work on windows (except see next paragraph), but doesn't on the samba shares for some reason [samba delete readonly = no]... haven't had a lot time to research this. Note that in Windows XP you can delete a read-only file - actually it goes to the recycle bin. If you select a file and then type Ctrl-Delete, it will ask you if you really want to delete it. Previous version of windows do not act this way. Anyway - just a taste of some of the weirdness of windows/samba.

Also, I was looking at the icy dock's for SATA's.. holy crap they are expensive compared to the PATA! The cheapest I found them was like $30! Thank you for the information!

August 31, 200619 yr Tom, Sorry to be a pain how would one assign parity & disk1 to be SATA drives? Thank you, Mike
August 31, 200619 yr It's done in the 'go' script, where devices are assigned to slots. This will be much clearer in the next release.
August 31, 200619 yr Actually the release includes these features: Able to set the disk shares as: - exported read-only, hidden "Hidden" means hidden from My Network Places. hmm, UnRaid pr0n support?
