bprohs Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 This is my first build and I'm experiencing a very strange boot issue. I currently have three drives. A 2TB for my parity drive, a 1TB, and a 500GB drive. I have mapped my two smaller drives and my 2TB is unassigned. When I boot my unraid with all three drives plugged in I get a flashing cursor in the upper right hand corner of my screen. If I boot with just my 2TB plugged in it boots just fine. If during the boot sequence when it gets to the ........stage I plug in the other two drives it continues to boot normally and I am able to log in from my computer with //tower. At this point everything looks fine. All of my drives show up and the two I have mapped are solid green. I'm thinking it has something to do with my bios settings but I have defaulted everything to factory settings with no change. I don't know if it's something simple or if I need to capture a syslog for someone to look at. If anyone has a suggestion I would really appreciate it. I have tried searching the forum but haven't been able to find a similar problem. I'm on release 4.7.
ubuntuaddicted Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 Sounds like an install issue. You have your bios set to boot to the USB stick right? Depending how much time you've spent I'd just do a reinstall ensuring ALL hdd are plugged in before booting the stick and running unRAID. Someone who uses unRAID may be able to help as I'm still building my first server BUT 5+ years of Linux knowledge tells me a hdd wasn't where it is now (controller wise) when u first ran unRAID Tapatalk is tha shizzle
prostuff1 Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 as you add those drives the USB is not being set as the boot device most likely. Plug in all your drives and set up your BIOS again. Might take some playing around to get it to work.
bprohs Posted December 16, 2011 Author Posted December 16, 2011 Thanks for the advice! I will play with my Bios tonight when I get home. I will disable all boot devices except my usb and see what that does.
bprohs Posted December 17, 2011 Author Posted December 17, 2011 I have changed my 1st Boot Device to Removable device, and disabled both the 2nd and 3rd boot devices. I have a field that says "Boot other device" It is set to yes. I'm not sure what that does. I've set all hard drive devices to sandisk which I assume is my boot disk. When I reboot my server it gets to the point where it says spin up group 1 and a message "No physical hard drive!" Again, with all drives plugged in I just get a flashing cursor in the upper right hand corner of my screen. If I unplug my drives it boots just fine. If I plug in the drives while it is booting I can then log in from my computer using //tower and my two drives show up green. I am attaching a syslog I just copied. Hopefully someone who knows more than I do can take a look and figure out what the heck I'm doing wrong. syslog-2011-12-16.zip
