Baron_Harkonnen Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 hi, i already mentioned this in the other post, but i think its something serious, and deserves a separate topic. here is part of the log: Dec 17 18:30:18 Tower kernel: ata4.00: exception Emask 0x10 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x180000 action 0x6 frozen (Errors) Dec 17 18:30:18 Tower kernel: ata4.00: edma_err_cause=00000020 pp_flags=00000000, SError=00180000 (Errors) Dec 17 18:30:18 Tower kernel: ata4: SError: { 10B8B Dispar } (Errors) Dec 17 18:30:18 Tower kernel: ata4.00: failed command: SMART (Minor Issues) Dec 17 18:30:18 Tower kernel: ata4.00: cmd b0/d8:00:01:4f:c2/00:00:00:00:00/00 tag 0 (Drive related) Dec 17 18:30:18 Tower kernel: res d0/00:00:01:4f:c2/00:00:00:00:00/00 Emask 0x12 (ATA bus error) (Errors) Dec 17 18:30:18 Tower kernel: ata4.00: status: { Busy } (Drive related) Dec 17 18:30:18 Tower kernel: ata4: hard resetting link (Minor Issues) Dec 17 18:30:19 Tower kernel: ata4: SATA link down (SStatus 0 SControl 300) (Drive related) Dec 17 18:30:19 Tower kernel: ata4: hard resetting link (Minor Issues) Dec 17 18:30:20 Tower kernel: ata15: exception Emask 0x10 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x4010000 action 0xe frozen (Errors) Dec 17 18:30:20 Tower kernel: ata15: irq_stat 0x00400040, connection status changed (Drive related) Dec 17 18:30:20 Tower kernel: ata15: SError: { PHYRdyChg DevExch } (Errors) Dec 17 18:30:20 Tower kernel: ata15: hard resetting link (Minor Issues) Dec 17 18:30:24 Tower kernel: ata4: link is slow to respond, please be patient (ready=0) (Drive related) Dec 17 18:30:26 Tower kernel: ata15: SATA link up 1.5 Gbps (SStatus 113 SControl 310) (Drive related) Dec 17 18:30:26 Tower kernel: ata15.00: configured for UDMA/133 (Drive related) Dec 17 18:30:26 Tower kernel: ata15: EH complete (Drive related) Dec 17 18:30:27 Tower kernel: ata4: SATA link up 3.0 Gbps (SStatus 123 SControl 300) (Drive related) Dec 17 18:30:27 Tower kernel: ata4.00: configured for UDMA/133 (Drive related) Dec 17 18:30:27 Tower kernel: ata4: EH complete (Drive related) Dec 17 18:47:07 Tower sSMTP[9269]: Creating SSL connection to host Dec 17 18:47:08 Tower sSMTP[9269]: SSL connection using RC4-SHA Dec 17 18:58:38 Tower kernel: ata15.00: exception Emask 0x10 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x4010000 action 0xe frozen (Errors) Dec 17 18:58:38 Tower kernel: ata15.00: irq_stat 0x00400040, connection status changed (Drive related) Dec 17 18:58:38 Tower kernel: ata15: SError: { PHYRdyChg DevExch } (Errors) Dec 17 18:58:38 Tower kernel: ata15.00: failed command: SMART (Minor Issues) Dec 17 18:58:38 Tower kernel: ata15.00: cmd b0/d8:00:01:4f:c2/00:00:00:00:00/00 tag 0 (Drive related) Dec 17 18:58:38 Tower kernel: res 50/00:ff:00:00:00/00:00:00:00:00/00 Emask 0x10 (ATA bus error) (Errors) Dec 17 18:58:38 Tower kernel: ata15.00: status: { DRDY } (Drive related) Dec 17 18:58:38 Tower kernel: ata15: hard resetting link (Minor Issues) Dec 17 18:58:44 Tower kernel: ata15: SATA link up 1.5 Gbps (SStatus 113 SControl 310) (Drive related) Dec 17 18:58:44 Tower kernel: ata15.00: configured for UDMA/133 (Drive related) Dec 17 18:58:44 Tower kernel: ata15: EH complete (Drive related) Dec 17 19:00:16 Tower kernel: ata15: exception Emask 0x10 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x4010000 action 0xe frozen (Errors) Dec 17 19:00:16 Tower kernel: ata15: irq_stat 0x00400040, connection status changed (Drive related) Dec 17 19:00:16 Tower kernel: ata15: SError: { PHYRdyChg DevExch } (Errors) Dec 17 19:00:16 Tower kernel: ata15: hard resetting link (Minor Issues) Dec 17 19:00:16 Tower kernel: ata4: exception Emask 0x10 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x180000 action 0x6 frozen (Errors) Dec 17 19:00:16 Tower kernel: ata4: edma_err_cause=00000020 pp_flags=00000000, SError=00180000 (Errors) Dec 17 19:00:16 Tower kernel: ata4: SError: { 10B8B Dispar } (Errors) Dec 17 19:00:16 Tower kernel: ata4: hard resetting link (Minor Issues) Dec 17 19:00:16 Tower kernel: ata4: SATA link down (SStatus 0 SControl 300) (Drive related) Dec 17 19:00:16 Tower kernel: ata4: hard resetting link (Minor Issues) Dec 17 19:00:21 Tower kernel: ata4: SATA link up 3.0 Gbps (SStatus 123 SControl 300) (Drive related) Dec 17 19:00:21 Tower kernel: ata4.00: configured for UDMA/133 (Drive related) Dec 17 19:00:21 Tower kernel: ata4: EH complete (Drive related) Dec 17 19:00:25 Tower kernel: ata15: SATA link up 1.5 Gbps (SStatus 113 SControl 310) (Drive related) Dec 17 19:00:25 Tower kernel: ata15.00: configured for UDMA/133 (Drive related) Dec 17 19:00:25 Tower kernel: ata15: EH complete (Drive related) (full log is also attached) clearly there is something wrong , but i have no idea what (controllers? disks? motherboard's pci?). some page i found on the net suggests that its has something to do with inadequate power supply, or bad sata cables. my power supply is 600W, and all sata cable are new out of the box. i tried a process of elimination - taking out controller one by one, to see if any of them is the trouble maker, it doesn't seem to help - the errors keep coming only the ata ports are changing in the log. maybe the problem is with disks? if so, which one? how to check what on what ata port disk sits on? thanks in advance My hardware: MB - ASUS Maximus Formula CPU-intel Q6600 Controllers - 6 onboard SATA II (ICH9R), Addaptec AAR1430SA x2, Addaptec AAR1220SA x1. drive bay - SNT 5.25 - 5 drives X3 Drives - 3x WD1000FYPS , 3x WD2000EARS, 2x WD2000EARX Flash drive - SanDisk Crueser Edge 4gb Unraid v4.7 syslog-2011-12-17-2.txt
Joe L. Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 You have 8 disks, but you did not mention the exact, specific make and model of your power supply. (it is not enough to simply say 600 watt, as we really need to know the amperage capacity of the 12 volt rail.) If a multi-rail supply, 12 volts at 18 Amps is not enough.
Baron_Harkonnen Posted December 17, 2011 Author Posted December 17, 2011 power supply is model PSH600R-D mono mode max output power is 600w i think its multi rail...it says on a sticker under "output" "+12V1" "+12V2" "+12V3" "+12V4" - 18.0A MAX. so...i guess ill have to buy new power supply? the interesting thing is - problems started only yesterday - before that i had no problems (and i added 2 additional drives like a week ago! and still everything was fine until yesterday...) - how come? Thanks
Baron_Harkonnen Posted December 18, 2011 Author Posted December 18, 2011 Just installed new CORSAIR AX850 PSU!!! all problems are gone! and the machine is quiet! (apparently cables can make high pitch noise! - didn't know!) anyway thank you very much for help!
JonathanM Posted December 19, 2011 Posted December 19, 2011 Just installed new CORSAIR AX850 PSU!!! all problems are gone! and the machine is quiet! (apparently cables can make high pitch noise! - didn't know!) Probably not the cables, more likely a failing piece inside the PSU http://www.jestineyong.com/?p=1226

(apparently cables can make high pitch noise! - didn't know!) Probably not the cables, more likely a failing piece inside the PSU http://www.jestineyong.com/?p=1226 My guess would be a power supply that had far too little capacity on its 12 volt rail powering the disks. Typically, only 1 rail on a multi-rail supply is used for all the disks, and frequently that same rail is shared with the motherboard. If the supply was rated at 18 Amps MAX, it probably had a real capacity of 16 Amps. 5 green drives at 2 amps each = 10 amps 3 non-green @ 3 amps each = 9 amps motherboard @ 3 to 5 amps case fans @ 1 amp Total min capacity needed = 25 Amps.
