Would love to hear some suggestions

I did some searching so please don't flame  ;D

I would like to start by saying that I am new to UNRAID servers. I am familiar with win servers, and Xservers. Basically would like some suggestions on what would be a good set up.

What I am looking for? Share my music, video, pictures and files. From my direct in house network (wired and wireless) and also have secure access from off site. Remote log-in.

Here is what I have for hardware:

Motherboard: Super Micro X7SPA-H Motherboard (Intel Atom D510, ICH9R Chipset)

Case: Chenbro ES34169-BK-120 120W Mini-ITX Server Chassis

2GB ram

12TB storage

I am wondering what is the best version of UNRAID for a beginner? (if it matters) I am using the newest beta I think

Recommended applications? (from what I have read, to run applications. Just create a folder with the name of the app, and put it on the flash stick?) I there more to know about installing apps? And is there a good interface to use? So far everything that I have done is all from ROOT commands.

thank you for any insight that can be given.

;D

hey.. i have a similar build...

those parts will run fine on 4.7 and any of the betas. (if your 12TB is 4x 3TB drives, you will need ver. 5Beta8 or newer for 3TB support)

because of the atom and the 2 gigs of ram, you will be limited in the add-ons you can run.

for vanilla unraid and some basic add-ons like unmenu it will be a very good, low electricity, silent setup.

any multimedia transcoding add-ons might have issues with HD content. i have never tried it.

For media hosting for streaming to something like XBMC, this build will be solid.

SABnzd, sickbeard, and couchpotato will run, but it will be a little slow/laggy at times.

i would up the box to 4GB of ram and add a 2.5" cache drive to the internal slot if you do go that route.

As for applications install, many popular apps can be installed with Unmenu. Browse the forum. I have installed a few. Sickbeard and Sabnzbd and Plex that way. http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php?

Thank you both for the insight. I am still learning as I go. Really love my machine so far. Still playing around and getting familiar with everything.

Only issue that I seem to be running into is accessing UNRAID from my browser //tower or // tower IP address. I tried with my mac and PC using Safari, firefox, IE, and Chrome. None work. The tower shows of in a finder window and I can access my drives that way, but not with the windows. Am I forgetting something? Is there something else that needs to be installed on the UNraid for this to work right?

I am going to try to assign another IP to the server and see if that works.
