coping between shares from windows

Featured Replies

So I was wondering. I have setup root share in windows to my unraid. Will coping between shares go through windows or just from one share to another - where windows just show the process...

And will it be different, if I do between two shares, which are not root shared?

Between two shares they will be copied locally, without traversing the network, rootshare should be the same, but never tried it.

I'd say it will depend on the location of source and target. I have observed the behaviour below

  • When source and target are within the same root share then I will be a server side copy.
  • When the 2 shares are completely different then files will go to Windows from the source then to the target.

Hope this helps.

This is not correct, with current Windows versions it will use Samba Server Side copy, so it won't use the network.
