Question about quantity of drives needed

Need to have at least 36tb capacity and plan on using 12tb drives. Is my math correct that I would need at minimum 4 drives: 1 parity, 3 data? If so I'm thinking of doing 5 drives: 1 parity and 4 data

    Yes (assuming you want only 1 parity drive).   You simply add up the size of all the data drives to get available space.
