(SOLVED)Physically moving the disks

Featured Replies

Hey guys I am hoping you can help me with something. I currently have a 12 bay system with only 5 disks. 1 Parity and 5 2TB green drives. I have just received a 1.5TB drive i want to use for a cache drive. Through all my reading everyone says to make sure it is on the mobo. I want to do this but I allready have the slot filled with a green drive.

What I was wanting to do is to just move all the drives down a slot and put the cache drive in the slot where disk one was located. I am just wanting to make sure I don't mess anything up. Can I do this and just restart the array or is there something else I am missing.  I have read the FAQ and post and I am still a little confused.

Thanks so much for the help.

You can move the disks between controllers just take note of the drive serial numbers and their order.

When you fire it back up just assign the disks where they were and the array should start after.

This depends on which version of unraid you're running. The 5.x beta series since version 6 no longer care about what physical port the drives are connected on. It will auto identify drives based on their serial numbers.

In earlier series (4.x) you need to take a screenshot/printout of the drives and which 'unraid slot' they're assigned to in the array.

Just so I understand this correctly. Even though Disk one is in the slot where disk2 was located and so fourth, I Just asign them to the same slots they were in before, according to my screen shot. This will not cause any issues. I am running the plus edition 4.7, not a beta.

Thanks again for the help.

On restarting the array won't start as the disks will be wrong so you just go into devices and then put the right serial numbers in the right disk slot.

When you go back to the main page all the disks should be green and the array should be able to be started.
