1st build, looking for a couple of part suggestions.

Featured Replies

Looking at building a new server to hold all my ripped DVDs/cds/and blurays, a lot of the parts listed on rajahal’s prototype builds are harder to source here in the UK so I have attempted to choose suitable replacements.

Mobo: Supermicro X9SCA-F

CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1230 3.20GHz

RAM: 4GB Kingston DDR3-1333 ECC CL9 Memory

PSU: Seasonic SS-660KM X-Series 660W - needs to power 2x 120mm fans, 4/5 80mm fans 20x green hds and a ssd cache drive.  - Already purchased

Case: CM Stacker 810 since I already own it and its huge.

Hot Swap Drive Bays: X-Case 5in3 Drive Storage Kit x4

SATA Expansion Cards:IBM M1015

Cables: 3Ware multi lane SFF8087 x 4

Fans: Noctua NF-R8 80mmx 4

USB stick: - looking for a recommendation here for a good usb stick, preferably available from scan(as that is where everything else is from). I don’t know if some are proven to work better/last longer.

Also considering getting a UPS, but have no idea if they are worth it, or if UPS support is integrated in unraid.

RAM:  - no idea here, the modules listed on the supermicro site don’t appear to be available in the UK – looking for 4 GB, since I’m under the impression it’s not worth having more?
I always start at the Kingston site and find what they say is compatible with my motherboard.  Then I go to my favorite online ordering company and search for one of the ones Kingston recomended.  You would likely be able to do something similar with other memory manufactures as well if Kingston memory isn't available in the UK.

Thanks I did exactly that, and found the memory on scan, not listed under server memory though but the model numbers appear to match.

A ups I think is a must the apc ones tend to be able to be used with unmenu. They aren't integrated with unraid but there is an unmenu add on that you can use. Search the forums for apcupsd.

I have made a few changes, and added links. The Xeon gives a lot more power and changed the HDD controller, both these changes should allow for more flexibility in the future. is there a general consesus ok which USB stick to use ?

Thank you Josh, I will look into that and will add one to the spec, although budget might force it to be a late addition.
