December 28, 201114 yr i have had my unRaid box for about 3 years now. i have recently been having problems with the hd files playing properly. (they seem to be stalling). here are my unraid specs Motherboard SuperMicro MBD-X7SBE http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813182142 CPU Celeron E3200 2.4 Dual Core http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116265 Ram 4GB (2 x 2Gb) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148160 Controller Card (2) SUPERMICRO AOC-SAT2-MV8 64-bit PCI-X133MHz SATA II (3.0Gb/s) Controller Card http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815121009 Hard Drives 3TB WD Parity Mixture of 1-3TB hitachi, WD, Seagate drives i can access my box in many different ways (all via Gigabit ethernet) Plex via my MacPro 1,1 (even on this it has lots of problems) PS3 via ps3media server (never really got this to work too well, but haven't spent a lot of time playing with it either) WD TV Live (this is my "go-to" device as it plays everything) when i play standard tv or even hd tv shows everything works great, but when i try to play a blu ray rip i sometimes get a problem. here is what i have running on my server sabnzdb sickbeard headphones plex server unmenu i believe that my problems is that the server is trying to do too much and can't handle everything. (please correct me if i am wrong) should i add more memory, a faster (maybe quad core) cpu, different motherboard? do i need to pull a syslog when this is happening or do you believe it is something basic like a hardware component? thanks in advance christopher
December 28, 201114 yr Just as a test disable the add ons and test HD playback. I understand Plex can be pretty demanding especially if transcoding is utilized. On their wiki page the recommended for Linux is a Intel Core Duo. They outline some basic memory testing too. Not sure the testing is applicable to unRaid though. Can you tell us how your network is connected. Any wifi involved? Does the movie stall all the time or is it random? http://wiki.plexapp.com/index.php/PlexNine_PMS_SysRequirements#Plex_Media_Server_only_.E2.80.93_Linux_PC
December 28, 201114 yr Author I will do some testing tonight. Everything is wired cat6 wire. sent from my HTC desire using tapatalk
December 28, 201114 yr Your all wired so thats good but what do you have for a switch?. If you nic is solid then either Plex or sabnzdb are probably the cause. The other apps are not demanding at all. If it happens on occasion maybe you can pin down the exact process causing the issue. I have a windows box with all those auxillary apps. The parity check and unrar causes my machine to drag and it's a 8400 core 2 duo. In my case high I\O is the problem. Memory and processing power are plenty. This might be happening to you. If you continue to have issues with sabnzdb stopped I would lean toward CPU being a issue. Curious..do you save the sabnzdb files on the protected array? Normally folks use the cache or a unprotected drive.
December 28, 201114 yr Author I have all my apps running on the cache drive. I will have to check and see which switch I have. I thought about running sabnzbd, sick beard, headphones and pled from my Mac pro, but then I have to have two power hogs running. sent from my HTC desire using tapatalk
December 29, 201114 yr well my unraid is a 1.70 ghz cpu 1 gb ram and streams 720p and full hd perfectly fine on 100 ethernet and even to laptops by wifi... never had any buffing or lagging problems
January 19, 201214 yr Author Just updated my processor to a 3.0Ghz Quad Core processor. I will update and let you know if this cures my problems or not.
January 24, 201214 yr I'm guessing you still had issues after stopping add ons. How is the system since adding the quad? It's only been a couple of days but a quad should be really noticeable.
January 24, 201214 yr Author yes, actually everything seems to be working great now. i am sure it was a combination of multiple things, but upgrading to a quad core processor seems to have helped. i can now do everything i want to at the same time without problems.
