Hi all, I have a HP Microserver and its been up and running a month or 2 and things are going good and its doing what I need like downloading with Sabnzbd and streaming to some media players.

I would like to add USB 3.0 ports to the micro server and the only way I can see is to add a PCIe card. I have tried 2 different cards both of which have the same NEC chip

are they supported in unraid 4.7 or do I need one of the betas ?

These are the two cards I purchased :

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004S0Y9FK

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B005ARLRXM  ( This one has this in description : -Open source Linux support which recognize this card are present in kernels 2.6.31+ )

This is what I get in PCI devices in System Info if it helps :

02:00.0 USB Controller: NEC Corporation Unknown device 0194 (rev 03) (prog-if 30)

Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 10

Memory at fe8fe000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable)

Capabilities: [50] Power Management version 3

Capabilities: [70] Message Signalled Interrupts: Mask- 64bit+ Queue=0/3 Enable-

Capabilities: [90] MSI-X: Enable- Mask- TabSize=8

Capabilities: [a0] Express Endpoint, MSI 00

Capabilities: [100] Advanced Error Reporting

Capabilities: [140] Device Serial Number ff-ff-ff-ff-ff-ff-ff-ff

Capabilities: [150] #18

Is there something I should have been looking for before buying it ? Any help much appreciated

Stuck with what?

Have you tried plugging a harddrive into it?  I use snap to mount drives.  Are you using that?

It might only function as usb2 without additional drivers.  I had to use them on my windows PC to get it working. The seagate drive needed a driver from memory.

Sorry lacehim,  "stuck" doesn't tell a lot, that's true.

At the moment I have the pci card installed and I know that it's getting power, when I attachment a 2.5 drive via USB it spins up and activity light shines, doesn't give my iPhone power though.

SNAP doesn't show a the drive when a "snap.sh -listDevInfo" is done. Only when I attached the drive to one of orignal USB ports will it show up in the list.

It's connected properly so I'm assuming that drivers may be the cause, there was only a windows cd supplied but that's no good to me I guess. The card thats connected did say it supports open source Linux support in kernels 2.6.31+. I don't know if this applies to unraid.

I really want like to get this card up and running and see if USB 3.0 does what it claims.

Any help at all would be much appreciated

Ok, I'm getting some where, well kinda..

I tried the latest beta out of curiosity and I can now see the drive in SNAP and also assign it and give it a share name. I was able to transfer a file over so happy days :)

I thought maybe the the liunx kernel was to blame version but its was updated to 2.6.31.5 back in version 4.5-beta8.

There was an update to add  "xHCI HCD (USB 3.0) support" in version 5.0-beta5, maybe this was the cure ??

I would prefer to have USB 3.0 working but would this be risky as this is my only unraid with my actual media on it ?? I wonder if there is anyway to get USB 3.0 working on Unraid 4.7

I'm getting around 50Mbps from memory from win7 to a seagate external usb3 hdd.

It sounds like you might be getting somewhere.  Maybe someone can help regarding getting it running on 4.7?

If your transferring large amounts of data you will notice the speed diff with USB3.

That's a pretty good speed!

xHCI is not enabled in the kernel provided with 4.7.

I can create a custom kernel/bzroot for you that would enable it.  PM me if you are interested.

Is it worth creating a new usercustomization thread for a more inclusive 4.7 bzroot/bzimage which contains as many kernel mods as possible that would be useful in unRAID.

I've often wished to have IDE CD-ROM support so I could burn CD's on my unRAID server.

I've also wished for USB sound support. While the whole sound support could be a bear, the least common denominator of USB sound support with AC97 (I think) might make it less of a burden.

Hmmm. and since I run on a pentium-m celeron for one machine enabling that as a CPU possibility could be helpful.

Sometimes I even wonder if it's worth compiling everything.

At the very least, you could track any requests and update the thread as things go along.

What goes into changing these kernels ?

I'm a complete novice and Unraid is my first taste at something command based whie doing little small tasks but I'd imagine something thats well over my head.

Credit to elkay14 Im now able to read and write from the USB 3.0 ports but speed is same as USB 2.0 still on Uraid version 4.7

If the thread can be moved that would be cool it might help someone else out
