Stable or Beta?

Hi All,

New to unRAID, but pretty delighted with the concept and simplicity of setup. I've mucked about with the latest beta as well as the 4.7 stable build. Now I'm ready to take the plunge and start using it to back up music and photo's. I'm sure this has been asked to death, but any thoughts on which to use for 'production'?

I'm currently on 4.7. I don't plan to do anything creative as far as add ins; at least not in the short term. So would like opinions on the most reliable build for a stock install. Normally I'd always consider the stable the way to go, but have read that there are some issues.

Thoughts? Thanks in advance.

I am in the same boat. I decided to stick with 4.7 because for now I do not need support for 3 TB drives or some of the addons that need 5.0+. Also, god forbid the beta had a hiccup when the wife wants to watch a movie :P.

I recently set up my first unraid server, and was considering both stable and beta as well.  I decided to give the beta a chance, and have not been disappointed.  Things have been running flawlessly on my system for about a month now.  I am running 5.0 beta 14 with a very simple system (1 data, 1 parity), I have set up some of the add-ons including Simple Features (beautiful GUI), APCUPSD, monthly parity check, and a couple others.  Things have been perfect thus far, and my daily (until i am 110% confident) emails from unraid, keep me in check with whats going on.

Good luck on your server!

what issues have you read about with the stable?

I'd always go with stable if you want the stable! unless you really need 3tb or the add ons.

to quite from a prev article:

"On Friday, 5.0 beta8c was released which included a critical bug fix addressing an issue with data rebuilding and subsequent “Parity Check” sync error.  Apparently, this issue also exists in 4.7 “Final” "

my understanding is that data can become corrupt under this circumstance. it has been fixed in the beta, but not final.

hope this helps,

From memory which is from a while ago that error only popped up under specific conditions, I think you had to be doing something else at the same time.
