Issues with random shutdowns on my unRAID server.

Featured Replies

I'm having an issue where my secondary unRAID server is randomly shutting down, with unclean shutdowns. I am currently running through hardware diagnostics to check to see if that's the issue, but it's taking some time to get results and I thought I'd ask for some help here. Nothing has changed since before the restarts have started happening that I can tell. I do have fairly older hardware, so it is likely that something has failed and I am willing to replace things as I go on. I did set up a log server, but for some reason it didn't write the logs to the share that I created for it. I went in to look and they were empty. All the logs I have are from system initiation after the restart, I don't have a log that includes the unsafe shutdown before the system initiation. The system does go completely down for a short period of time, then spins back up. I have an HP HBA 12gb SAS card for my drives, which does increase boot time a bit, and is rather old so it may be causing issues. Any help would be appreciated, I will also keep looking at my diagnostics, I am currently going through a full metest86+ test, but it's gonna be a minute.

did set up a log server,

A common mistake is not to set either the Mirror to Flash option OR to set the Unraid Server address into the Remote Server field.    If neither set is set then nothing will be recorded.

I thought if I wanted to not write to the flash drive, but to one of my actual cache drives I didn't select mirror syslog to flash. I have it set like this currently.

Memtest86+ came back with no errors.

To achieve what you want you need to put your server’s address into the Remote Syslog Server field as mentioned into the syslog server link.

Done that, doing SMART tests currently to test for more hardware issues. Will report back if I manage to catch some logs that say what happened on unclean shutdown.

SMART came back fine, I've had no further restarts so I have no more logs to share, but it did restart itself twice yesterday before I fixed the logging.

I also ran some CPU stress testing, calculating pi/monte carlo for something like 2-3 hours, and it was fine other than getting a little warm.
