January 3, 201214 yr Hi, I've been planning out my own unRAID server for some time now and have hit a brick wall with motherboards. I have the following case I got on black friday for an insanely cheap price and don't plan to change it because it fits my tv setup aesthetically, but it only supports mini-itx: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811112265 I've been looking at the unRAID wiki motherboards and their NIC's that have been tested with unRAID but for the life of me cannot find one with mini-itx that I would be sure would work, I see that case is also listed on the unRAID wiki, anybody have a Intel based mini-itx board they know will work? Thanks!
January 4, 201214 yr if you are not scared of beta versions. I think pretty much any intel and realtek card now works with ver. 5B14 without knowing what kind of CPU you are getting, it is hard to recommend a board. but most anything from and atom to a semperon to an I3 would do the ticket.
January 4, 201214 yr I used the Biostar TH61-ITX MB in my Lian Li PC-Q25 case. It is an Intel socket 1155 MB on which I installed a Core i3 2100 CPU. It has the Realtek 8111E NIC, but, I have not seen any problems yet running the v5b14 version of unRAID. Here is a thread with pics of my unRAID build: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=17345.msg157856#msg157856
January 5, 201214 yr Author I'm planning on doing some live encoding/streaming, so most likely an i3 on the 1155 socket would be most useful.
January 6, 201214 yr What about this one? http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=5133.0 Supermicro X7SPA L/H/HF ATOM serverboards (Level 1 Tested) Sent from my DROID2 using Tapatalk
January 6, 201214 yr What about this one? http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=5133.0 Supermicro X7SPA L/H/HF ATOM serverboards (Level 1 Tested) Sent from my DROID2 using Tapatalk These are very solid boards for both windows and *nix (unRAID of course). The IPMI feature makes them with the extra money. The only issue some users might have that they do not have a lot of horsepower for "on the fly transcoding" of HD content.
January 6, 201214 yr "HD a must" ... does not give enough info. Is HD *REAL TIME TRANSCODING* a must? As in will you be running Plex or XBMC on unRAID? Or are you just streaming a file to a media player that happens to be HD content? The former requires some of HP (not a lot, my Athlon II 7750 did even break a sweat) , the latter, can be done with an Atom cpu.
January 7, 201214 yr Yes will be running xbmc on unRAID. Will xbmc be running on a HTPC accessing a separate unRAID server or do you plan to do some fancy setup with XBMC and unRAID in one machine?
January 8, 201214 yr Author Nothing fancy, like running XBMC on unRAID, I don't like the idea of putting applications on a file server.
January 8, 201214 yr Then you mean unRAID to XBMC.. and if that's the case, XBMC will do the transcoding so the unRAID server needs a decent amount of RAM, a good set of disks and a good network adapter. It does not require hefty CPU as that will be done by the XBMC/HTPC.
January 8, 201214 yr Author Yes sorry, that's what I mean. I'm dysgraphic so I have trouble conveying things in the written word. Thank you for your patience, I actually already have an i3 processor, and know my memory requirements. Just need a board with a NIC that's unRAID friendly because I'd rather not user beta versions.

I am using a MB with the Realtek 8111E NIC and I am running a beta version of unRAID both of which made me nervous at first as well; however, the current v5 beta (14) seems to have no issues with the 8111E NIC and both have been very stable. As Tom recently posted, version 5 is close to becoming a "stable" official release and he will be adding the 3.2 Linux core to the next beta which has several networking improvements.
