Need some advices about my unRAID usages

Featured Replies

Hi there,

I'm giving a third try to unRAID now, as I was testing multiple types of hypervisors and nested ones, and I'm back to unRAID.

I had difficulties to understand how unRAID works with the array, parity, cache, etc. That's why I was done with it before, and was back to Windows + VMware Workstation. But I found that the UI of unRAID was clean, and I really would like to try again.

Actually, I'm using unRAID as a beginner. Obviously 😁. I just use the default shares, created some VMs and that's all, for now.

The system seems working fine, but I got some little issues:

  • I created a Linux Mint LMDE6 VM, and I give it the usage of my iPhone SE via USB. Sometimes, it seems to be disconnected. So I loose the Internet access. Strangely, in unRAID, the iPhone is still connected to the VM. If I uncheck the iPhone on the VM configuration, then I check it again, sometimes I totally loose the unRAID Web Interface Access, and the ping too. But the the VM is still usable, and pingable (it's on an another network). So I need to reboot the server with a 'normal shutdown' (short button press on my case) and it stops. Then I reboot it, and I can connect to the WebUI. I don't know why it's doing that;
  • I use the default 'isos' share to put some OS isos. This share was configured to only use 2 little 32 GB SSDs. But, unRAID wants to use an another disk? What I don't want. The'system' share is doing the same. If I change these shares configuration, unRAID yell at me saying that "Share is outside the list of designated disks". I searched for tutos, but I don't understand what to do.

So, I need some help about these 2 issues.

You can check my signature, to see what's my hardware configuration.

Here is my array, parity and cache:

As you can see, I don't really use the server as it is supposed to. I'm just testing if it can hold my purposes.

Here are the shares:

Here, the "isos" share configuration:

I would like to know how to move what is on the Disk7 to an another one, and manage the shares like I want:

  • ISOS = on the 2 PNY 32GB SSDs only (Disk1 / Disk2)

Sorry for the big topic :/

Thanks a lot for you help

Normally you would only use Included OR excluded disk setting on a share.   When you change the share settings then this will apply to new files - it will not cause existing files to be moved automatically.

If you already have files for the share on other drives then you need to manually move them.  The Dynamix File Manager would be the easiest way to do this.

Hi @itimpi

thanks for your reply. It helped me. I'm really happy

As I am not really comfy with unRAID yet, I took time to do the moves I needed.

What I can say is that I encoutered issues I didn't expect. I explain:

- I stopped all my instances, VMs, Dockers, etc.

- then I launch a 'mover'

- and... all my stuff moved from the array to the cache! Oo'

I think it's not a normal way. And I think I found why:

So, I changed some parameters, and launched a 'mover' once again... and some of the stuff moved to the array again. Great.

Then, I used your app "Dynamix File Manager". I had to create some root folders and give permissions to move exactly as I would. And it seems to work. I can laucnh normally my instances.

And finally, I modified shares parameters, to make stuff only on the array, except 'appdata' and 'system'.

Example for 'domains':

And all my shares are happy:

Except 'system'... after some searches, I found some files in a 'docker' folder, caintaining itself a second 'docker' subfolder':

What should I have to do with? As 'mover' seems not doing anything...

(EDIT: as all my drives are SSDs, is it really useful to keep a cache pool? if not, I disable it, and put the SSD in the array)

Thanks for your great help :)
