bw1 Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 NORCO RPC-4224 4U Rackmount Server Case with 24 Hot-Swappable SATA/SAS Drive Bays It looks like this is as cheap as it's been since last May.
Rajahal Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 Nice find! I assume these are the new models with the yellow backplanes (contrary to what the Newegg pictures show)?
c3 Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 My Dec 2011 from NewEgg has yellow backplanes and plastic seal across the bottom (80mm fans )
ibixat Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 it looks like the deal is over already, I grabbed one and had a question for those in the know, can anyone provide me an idiot proof link or two for the cables I'd need to connect my saslp-mv8 card and 6 on board sata connectors to the backplanes? My guess was 2 of these.. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816133034 and then 2 of these for the motherboard connectors? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816133033 if I'm wrong on either one can someone direct me to the right ones.

Those cables are correct.

Those cables are correct, but here's a better source for the miniSAS cables: Monoprice.com. Those cables are shorter (which is good) and half the price. The quality is fine. You'll need two of these cables for each SASLP card. Typically four total miniSAS cables are needed (for two SASLP cards), and two reverse breakout cables (for the 6 onboard ports).

The mono price ones are longer. Reverse breakouts can also be purchased through ipcdirect.com. I think pro vantage and super biz may have them as well. The quality between the Norco ones and the mono price ones is negligible. Remember that longer isn't always better. Only get the longer ones if they are not going to reach, otherwise you will be trying to coil and tuck all that extra cable. Additional cabling in your case will only interfere with airflow unless properly managed.

Sorry, you are right, I was remembering incorrectly. The Newegg cables are shorter, and the Monoprice ones are longer. Both work equally well (though the longer cables pose a cable organization challenge).

ohlwiler Posted January 12, 2012 Posted January 12, 2012 Last time I checked, monoprice had 0.5m, 0.75m, and 1.0m cables. Only the forward breakout cables are sold in that length. The SFF-8087 to SFF-8087 cables are 1 meter in length. Monoprice does not sell reverse breakout cables. I purchased my reverse breakout cables from Newegg open box (they show up often) and my 8087 to 8087 cables from ebay. I paid about $5 apiece for each type.
ibixat Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 in my infinite lazyness (or maybe it's my lack of spare time anymore, working 15+ hours of overtime per week is brutal on the free time) I waited to order the cables for too long and wanted them to assemble this saturday so I went ahead and ordered them from newegg with overnight shipping so I could get it done this weekend, sometime saving a few bucks isn't all that matters =) Thanks for confirming I had the right cables picked out though, would have sucked to get the wrong ones.

The only 0.5 meter mini-SAS cable that I see on Monoprice is this one: 0.5m 30AWG Internal Mini SAS 36pin (SFF-8087) Male w/ Latch to SATA 7pin Female (x4) Forward Breakout Cable - Black Which doesn't look the same as this one: 1m 30AWG Internal Mini SAS 36pin (SFF-8087) Male to Mini SAS 36pin (SFF-8087) Male Cable - Black
