parity not working?

Hi,

I added a new drive (for additional capacity) to my array and found that while the system would boot, it would only be responsive for a minute or two before the web GUI would fail to connect, and I could no longer ping or connect to a share. Thinking I may have hit the limit of my PSU, I removed the smallest drive and the server was then responsive.

The GUI reported the drive I disconneted as not installed (as expected), and said that the data from the missing drive would still be available. Unfortunately, this is not the case...

The last parity check had been successful, so I don't know why the data isn't available. Is it possible that parity isn't working, or do I have to manually do something?

Appreciate any suggestions.

I can connect to the disk share and see a little bit of the foder structure (i.e. some of what I would expect to see through the user shares), but no actual files.

FYI - I'm running 4.5 Pro

Besides... you'll see no more with a disk drive installed in place of the missing disk than with it simulated.

If using one of the newer betas, run the fix-permissions utility.

I have tried to get the full log, but it makes the browser crash. Is this enough (it just seems to be repeated over and over again)?:

Jan  9 04:40:01 Tower kernel: REISERFS error (device md6): vs-13070 reiserfs_read_locked_inode: i/o failure occurred trying to find stat data of [448 465 0x0 SD]

Jan  9 04:40:05 Tower last message repeated 28234 times

Jan  9 04:40:05 Tower emhttp: disk_spinning: open: No such file or directory

I am running 4.5

That error would indicate disk6 cannot be read.  Is it the new disk?  Or an existing disk?  The issue might be as simple as a loose cable to the drive.

If existing, you probably need to run reiserfsck on it as described in the wiki.

Just for future note, don't just go pulling random drives out when you suddenly are having issues.

The new disk may be having issues. The parity + every other data disk must be healthy to simulate or rebuild a disk. In your case, disk6 is not healthy and you've now pulled the wrong disk making it much harder to recover disk6 if that is necessary.
