New Build For YouTuber - Maximize Xfer Speed for Video Archiving & Remote Monitoring

Recommended Posts

I would appreciate your input on data transfer options for a new build for an up-and-coming YouTuber (my son) to house video archives. Specifically, what are the fastest foolproof data transfer options from a laptop to the new Unraid server (basic specs below)?

HIS USE CASE: My son's YouTube business is rapidly growing (almost 1M subs). He posts once per week and requires a solution to house large video files. He currently uses external HDDs to store and transfer data and does NOT have an organized repository of his old videos. He uses a laptop to edit his video footage and requires a fast/seamless process to upload video content onto the server that doesn't interfere with his 16-18 hours-a-day laptop use. This could be a physical P2P connection, ethernet, or WiFi. His laptop (MSI GE66 Raider 10UG-211) has the following ports:

  • USB 3.1 Gen 2
  • USB 3.2 Gen 1
  • USB 3.2 Gen 2x2
  • 2.5MBps ethernet

MY USE CASE: I would like to handle the day-to-day management of his server remotely (2K mile separation). I'm considering an ASRock ROMED8-2T MB that does have IPMI support...but, I have zero experience using this. I'm sure there are many ways to skin this cat. What is the easiest to setup and use?

No HW or SW has been purchased, so I'm open to different approaches if there are better ways to fulfill his needs. Thanks!
