When the mover is running, i can't stream a tv show?

Recommended Posts

My array is all spinning hard drives with two parity drives and my cache drive is a NVME. The other day i had the mover run to move a bunch of files from the cache drive to the array at the time someone was using plex and watching a TV show which stopped streaming when the mover started. Once the mover was done everything streamed as normal.

I use a Dedicated GTX for transcoding but nothing was being transcoded at the time. It does not matter what type of content you stream VGA, 720p, 4K etc it will not stream when the mover is running.

Is this to be expected or do i have something configured wrong?

CPU load was 15%

32GIGs of ram with 6GB in use

Dedicated GTX usage was at 12%

Thanks for the help.

Mover is intended for idle time. Default schedule is once per day during the night.

Yes i know but i accidentally used it. Others have said i have something configured wrong that it should not matter?

It would seem like the only way to avoid it would be the entire array where all SSD.

No, that would be a bit extreme.  There are very many people who use Unraid for media streaming (as this was one of the primary reasons Unraid was original built).  It just takes a little management on your part.

How much data is there typically for the mover to handle?  How long does it take to move the data?

When are people typically streaming video?

Are there other activities also taking place at this time (backups, downloads/torrents/etc)?

Is the server healthy, without any inherent problems or issues?

It should not be difficult to find a time to schedule the mover to run which does not interfere with other activities.

Also, consider whether you really need to use the cache for your large files. For instance, I don’t use cache for any of my video files. The files are typically added to my media storage in an automated fashion and I don’t care that it might take a few minutes longer to transfer the files to the media share so don’t use the cache for that share. This minimizes the amount of data that Mover will need to move when it runs.

If you use the Mover Tuning plugin you can also get more customization of when mover will run.

No there is no other activities taking place no downloads server is healthy.

It depends sometimes the mover is moving a TB other times a few hundred gigs. I usually let it move on the 2am schedule.

Other unraid users have stated that they can run the mover and still stream TV shows but know one can explain how.

I would think the bottle neck is the spinning hard drives. That NVME cache drive can max out the spinning hard drives causing anything being pulled from the array to stop. IE streaming.
