Stay with 4.7 or move to 5.0?

I currently use 4.7 and I am quit happy with it. Can I still use a 3 TB disk in it ( up to 2.2 TB). If this is at all possible what steps should be taken? Or should I move to 5.0? What would be the most stable version?

I believe you can use 3TB drives with 4.7 but you will only be using 2ish TB per drive. 5.0, however, supports 3 TB. Main reasons for moving to 5.0 beta, at least for me, are support for 3Tb drives and support for addons like SimpleFeatures etc.

What hardware you have?  Plenty of people running the beta without issue.

I use a HP EX490 WHS server and a Sans Digital TR5M-B eSATA tower. What hardware is most critical?

There are still some issues with the lsi controller so I wanted to get hardware out in the open.

I am running the HP N40L micro server with four 3TB drives under version 5b14 and it rock solid not a single complaint and I also run 4.7 in my Movie UnRaid server on a different hardware platform. I found myself standing in front of the same door you are finding yourself and I decided it is too much of a hassle to do the 4TB to 2.2TB conversion and then later to increase it again to 3TB. I am happy that I decided to use the HP N40L micro server for the beta release and I really do not have a complaint. In addition the GUI for the version 5 beats version 4.7 hands down.

It's very tempting now to move to 5.0. The HP40NL is off course a different platform then the EX490. Is it easy to switch from 4.7 to 5.0?

Pretty easy, just go through the relese notes and follow upgrade process. I've upgraded and downgraded without major issues. Just disable add ons beforehand.

Good point, are SABNZB and S.N.A.P. likely to cause any problems? What is the best way to see which add-ons are enabled. Will unMenu and screen need to be updated or the preclear script? I also have the clean powerdown package installed.

I run very little on my box so I can't say..someone with experience on those items can help.

Depends on how they were added. Go file is my first stop, after that I look at unmenu. It's easy to spot a original go file doesn't have much.

First step to any upgrade is a backup..so backup that flash drive.

Rename the go file to .bak and put a clean one in. This is easiest way to disable all add ons.

Reboot and take a look at the system.

Also, You don't want to upgrade if your array has any outstanding issues, so correct any issues before attempting the upgrade.

Just to chime in with my version 5.b14 process. I did install license on a new USB key, installed the four 3TB Hitachi drives then precleared the drives and ran a parity check. After those few day operations I had a new server with 9TB of free data discs. Then I copied several TBs of TV shows to the new server. No conversion or update from 4.7 to 5b14, just plain vanilla virgin install of 5b14, then addons like unmenu & cached dirs and a few others using unmenu. Then parity check on the empty discs followed by real data transfers.

It gives ease & peace of mind and knowing that no additional baggage or possible difficulties from upgrade/update slipped in.
