HELP: Pools, Highpoint M.2 Raid Cards and BTRFS

Featured Replies

Hello all,

I've used Unraid for a couple of years now and it has been rock solid and I love it.  I've used other NAS software in the past and finally decided to give Unraid a go and it has been a great experience.

First, let me explain what I've been trying to do.

I wanted to put in a 4 slot PCIx card to hold 4 M.2s into my server and run them as JBOD and basically just have a union file system managed in Unraid.  I did not care about Parity or Redundancy but I did want them to function as a single drive with a common share.

I bought this card:

https://www.amazon.com/HighPoint-Technologies-SSD6204A-Controller-Virtualization/dp/B0B2BY58Y2/ref=sr_1_3?crid=36KU9TN5ER5C9&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.XjU-_z2J-t0Ngs4nQqhGNoIUS0c3DImS7pF-oEUfkU5djqeldKy-RZO-X-ZKt__jvzoDMpZHskXD5z8qLMHQf15n57B2Zslk6Ag3x8tJKjy-bcb-jTtp4NgwEjQeL4Iu2DZcmCgllGELi1PzZOy0Mj0bFXJ9xrLSe9wUhK5nFhADNgU0NVWYyhoOKbFxAbgCdvvWTRFGL8KY2B_8dHfUhaWc9tZ4TEwbkLjln134QUc.YZVYMzukXSO72AdMRUrhedb50dEEbYCvHC415AbXRnM&dib_tag=se&keywords=highpoint&qid=1720236002&sprefix=highpoint%2Caps%2C80&sr=8-3

Highpoint M.2 SSD6204A that can function in JBOD mode.  My plan was to have 4 4TB NVMEs in there and have a ~16TB network share that would be separate from my primary array that uses 12 mechanical drives.

I tried other cards in the past like the ASUS Hyper M.2 but I needed a card with an onboard controller as my server can not do Bifurcation to split the drives.

On top of that, I run Unraid as a VM inside of Proxmox and I have used PCI Passthrough for my LSI HBA card for my Array for years with no problem.

When I passthrough the Highpoint card, it sees the drives no problem... but...

When I stop and restart the array, the drives end up having different names that bounce around.  One of them will be called Highpoint_SSD6204_XXXXXXXXX and the other ones will be eui.XXXXXXXXXXXX.  But that one changes each time.  And I have since lost the data on that Cache pool because now it says they are Unmountable disks and I need to reformat them.  But this is the second time it did that so I know now that this isn't working the way I'd hoped.

When I set up the BTRFS I chose "Single" since I didn't want the drives raided.

Does anyone have any experience with what I'm trying here, or specifically with that HIghpoint card and can tell me if what I was trying to do can be achieved?

Thank you for your time.
