Posted July 10, 20241 yr so i was searching but couldnt find any recent posts about upgrading hardware. so what would be the procedure in upgrading to a new motherboard and cpu? will it just port directly over or do i need to do something? upgrading from a decade old xeon 8 core to a amd 5950x 16 core (came out of my old gaming pc). it runs a couple dockers and vm's but mostly worried about losing my backup data stored on it from all of my devices. any suggestions or safe practices?
July 10, 20241 yr If both new and old hardware are using plain SATA controllers or HBA's in IT mode, the array disks will move without any intervention. VM's that have hardware passed through will need to be edited, as the hardware will change (duh). Docker containers are typically hardware agnostic, but once again, if there is any hardware passed directly to them... 15 hours ago, orkid1989 said: any suggestions or safe practices? Set the array to NOT auto start. Confirm recent parity check had 0 errors. Move all drives, if the new hardware will boot legacy it should boot right up, if not you may need to rename the EFI- folder to EFI. Make sure you research any BIOS quirks needed for your specific AMD combo, there are many more gotcha's with AMD than there are with intel when it comes to linux and by extension Unraid. There is a whole thread on troubleshooting AMD issues.
