BTRFS Balance stuck in a loop

Featured Replies

I'm banging my head against a brick wall with this one and hoping someone can help.

I had an SSD go bad so, whilst I had to remove it from a 2 drive BTRFS cache pool in RAID1.  The array started back up OK and was running fine until a replacement SSD arrived and was fitted.

I added it to the cache pool as per the docs, configured it and set a balance off so the new SSD would fill up as a mirror.  However; it get's to about 6% remaining and just sticks there.  The log just repeats `BTRFS info (device nvme0n1p1): found 1 extents, stage: update data pointers`  about 15-20 times a second and nothing seems to move.

Stopping the balance shows it's at 81.3% No Balance Required, but I don't trust it.

To try and force it, I performed a Balance into single mode and that completed successfully, showing both the 512GB SSDs as a single 1TB pool. So I kicked off another rebalance (RAID1) but it stuck at the same place again, with the same phrase repeated in the logs.

Any ideas what might be causing this and how to resolve?  Conscious that I may not have a fully protected cache pool with the appdata folder on it...

If the balance is getting stuck I would recommend backing up and then recreating the pool.

When you say recreate the pool - do you mean completely destroy it, or remove the 2nd drive, format and re-add it again?

The former, the latter will probably have the same issue again.

Thanks. This seems now be back to normal, although it's not needed to perform a balance yet. At least everything is in RAID1 and seemingly protected.
