Change the Parity HDD putting a second Parity HDD then removing the 1st

Hallo community.

Sorry if this is a noob question, I tried to search for similar topics but I didn't find one in the first pages.

As the title, I'm wondering if I can "upgrade" my Parity HDD with a bigger one, using this technique:

- 1.5 TB actually in Parity 1

- Install a 4 TB in Parity 2

- Let the system doing its magic

- When the system is in normal conditions, remove the Parity 1 HDD from the array, then clean it and re-install it as standard HDD for data.

You can do that, but need to leave the new parity as parity2, they are not interchangeable.

First of all, thanks a lot for the quick reply. The (obvious) following question is:

- Will I have problems if I keep my system with just a "Parity 2" HDD on it?
   (I have a slight OCD, but I think I can withstand the Array UI with the empty Parity 1 slot 😅... I hope 😁

- In the future could I still do the same technique, reversed? (i.e. let's say I attach an 8TB and set it as Parity 1; then remove the 4TB Parity 2; finally clean and attach again the 4TB as data HDD)

If the first answer is a "no", and the second one is a "yes", then I'm totally all right! I'll start the thing soon 💜

No, as long as you are aware it cannot be used as parity1 after a new config for example, or if you need to re-assign the drives.

Yes.

Why not just do the replacing of Parity 1 with the larger drive directly?

Probably because I don't trust my other HDDs enough 😅.

I suppose that if I totally remove the first small Parity HDD, I'll have some day of precarious situations, if I need to wait for the new bigger Parity HDD catching up with the other drives, correct?

 

Using "my technique" I'll doubly sure that all will be perfect, in the period of time I have both the Parity drive attached together. Also, letting the new bigger HDD to gain the Parity status gives me some time to evaluate it and to check it in its first days; maybe it's too limited as a test, however it's better than nothing.

If you don't trust your hard drives enough to build parity once then you can't trust them at all for any operations. The drives could just as well have an even number of errors (error on reading Sector X on Data Drive 1 and Data Drive 2 resulting in technically correct for Parity Drive 1 and producing incorrect Parity Drive 2 result) while building the second parity drive and you'd be no better off.
