how fast should copying be from Desktop to Unraid when recently upgraded to 10G

Featured Replies

so i just upgraded to a 10g nics and switch i trying out

i copied 50 gig file from windows desktop to unraid

both are on a Gen3 or Gen4  i forget right now

unraid nvme appdata drive

desktop nvme main drive

when  i copy it peaks at 300mb/s  is that right?  or is that too slow  as its my first time using 10g  stuff... i thought should be close to 1000mbs  or 900mbs right?

since i totaly newbie  with 10g  i did see a setting for jumbo frames in the switch i set it to 12270

but maybe you guys with more experience can tell me do i need other stuff or tweak stuff or is that the right speed?

and i using 10gtek nics and a binardat 12 port 10gb switch

Your post is a bit confusing.   Mb  - Mega-bits    and   MB  - Mega-bytes  Transmission speed is often given in Mb when data transfer rate/speed is often given in MB.  I know it is confusing but capital and small letters are important!

  • Author

i guess MB/s   so i only getting 300 meg a second

windows file copy is only showing  250-275 MB/s    i thought on a 10GB   i should be gettin 800 mega bytes per second    clsoe to the 1GB/s   but i only getting 250  so  like 1/4 of the speed i should be getting right

  • Author

i did find  Unraid to Unraid Copying in Krusader..  if i pull the 50 gig file i get 800 -975 MB/s

if i push it starts off at 800-1GB    then drops down to 500MB/s

but if copying in windows  to unraid.  only getting like 250-275MB/s peaks at 300MB/s

I do not have a 10Gb capability.  But you have to realize that, with 10Gb, you will usually run into other bottlenecks.  Hard Disk transfer speeds max out about 250GB/sec.  SDD read speeds are usually much higher than the write speeds.  Virtually all SSD's have a cache of high speed Memory that has high write speed but slows down significantly  as soon as it is full.  Unraid uses unused RAM  of your Unraid server to bluffer incoming data until it get full and then it will slow to the speed of the drive to which it is being written.

Describe in greater detail what your setup was.  What was the hardware on the source and what was the hardware on the destination end?  Were there two servers involved?  (By hardware, I specially mean the disks and the type of SATA connection (1, 2, or 3) but include any other pertinent data about the Windows client.)

Again describe the hardware on both ends.   Also was this also a 50Gb file?

In both cases did you make sure that you had the disks on both ends spun up before you started?

Also add your diagnostics file in a new post in this thread.

so  i guess my deslixa messaged up what i was saying

so i said in my orginal post  Desktop pc at a Gen 3 or Gen 4  NVME drive  and so was the unraid Server

i was copying from nvme to nvme  to test it as it wont max out at 250 for hard drives

so my unraid servers and desktop pc   are   Asus X570 boards

running Gtek10

so on the unraid to unraid

i pulled and pushed a 50 gig file

from nvme  to nvme the appdata folder... was just easier to test that way  and i got 800-975 MB/s  to pull  but to push i started off at 900 but dropped down to 500 MB/s

for the desktop PC  coping from the Windows Boot   is a Samsung 990 PRO 2TB   when i copy to the nvme appdata folder  i get max of 250 average   and peaks at 300 sometimes

and i checked  the unraid server thats online right now other is off..  but its runn  Mirrored  Samsung 980 PRO 2TB NVME  and when i got desktop to this unraid  i only get like 250mb

so that is   990 Pro  ----> 980 Pro      i never tested  copying from  Unraid to Desktop yet... only trying to push   as i did nvme testing   so i know i can try to get as fast as i can get

Built into recent versions of Unraid is iPerf3   To test using it to test between your Unraid servers, do the follow on One server:

image.png.552e3af3b7ac127a9eed8cf46a6cd34d.png

And on the other server:

image.png.346e5a3de9f410abaeba905fbfd92b5c.png

This will show you the max network speed.  Any reduction is usually the result of hardware.

appdata folder

This is likely to have a lot of small files, so not a good test, so test the max speed use large files only.

Have you changed the MTU from its default setting of 1500?  (This has caused problems in the past...)

What is the speed that Windows says the adapter  is running at?    Start   >>>  Settings   >>>  Network & Internet   >>>  Properties
