July 16, 20241 yr I am looking at upgrading my server from an i5-4460. I want more cores for vms and dockers, and something that will do better with plex encoding, and has m.2 for some fast appdata. The intel i7-14700 bundle at microcenter looks real appealing ($549 with MB and 32GB DDR5-6000). There is also the intel i7-12700k bundle there ($299 with 16GB of DDR4-3200). The 12th gen I would want to add ram to though. I would like at least 32. I am leaning towards the 14th gen bundle. It seems like a great deal. My concern is the cooler. What is a good cheap cooler to get decent performance when the sever is loaded? Most of the time it should have little load but I don't want to handicap my self in 10 years either when the hardware is old. Am I over doing things?
