Unraid won't start on ASUS NUC 14 Pro+ (Intel Core Ultra 9 185H)

Featured Replies

Hello everybody.

I switched to a brand new ASUS NUC 14 Pro+ with Intel Core Ultra 9 185H equipped with 64GB DDR5-5600 and Samsung NVME 990 Pro 1TB.

First of all I updated the BIOS to latest version, then I ran a MemTest twice and everything seems fine.

So I tried to boot Unraid from a USB pendrive I created in November 2023 and it didn't work. Then I recreated the USB pendrive by using the "Unraid USB Creator Tool" and I downloaded the latest stable version.

Anyway it won't start in GUI version, probably due to missing Intel ARC GPU drivers.

So I tried to use Unraid 7.0-Beta2 and the GUI worked for the first boot, but then it died again.

The NUC is still accessible by IP address on browser but since I need to run different things, I need to use Unraid with UI.

My needs are:

• Windows 11 VM

• A Debian-based distro already installed on external USB that I need to boot in a VM

• Docker/Container for Plex Server

• Docker/Container for Homebridge

I also have a Synology 1522+ NAS but Plex works very bad on it because of the lack of GPU.

So I would install Plex Server on Unraid and let it to pickup files from NAS over LAN.

I need to use Unraid with GUI since this NUC is the only computer I have, and it's attached to a LG 4K TV.

When booted with Unraid 7.0-Beta2 the UI was very tiny and I didn't find a setting to scale 4K resolution to 200%.

So, is Unraid a solution for all of my needs?

I already considered Proxmox but it has no GUI even if it could be installed on top of Debian.

I've also taken a look to XCP-ng with Xen Orchestra but it's very expensive.

PS: I already purchased an Unraid license (Basic, legacy license) in November 2023 but I never used it so I would finally use it.

PPS: is USB4/Thunderbolt 4/3 supported on Unraid? I tried to bind them to VFIO but the checkbox is greyed out and I can't select it.

Is there anyone that could help me?

Thanks

Nope, they’re using an old Linux Kernel even for Unraid 7 BETA. So I returned it since I needed to use Unraid!

Thanks for your update, I never got past the booting up part after I selected to boot the GUI (it is just stuck after that). It does boot with non-gui but that is not preferred and also I doubt it would properly be supporting the device as it is not capable of booting in GUI anyway.

Can you clarify that? That is usually the normal way to boot and run Unraid, you then access the GUI over LAN, GUI mode is more for troubleshooting or an emergency.
