July 28, 20241 yr Hi Guys, Im current running my unraid server off an "old" workstation fujitsu workstation. I would like to build a new server for unraid since the workstation doesnt have much options when it comes to adding drives etc. I would love to save as much money as possible so I was wondering if its an good idea keeping the i5-8500T (and maybe the 16gb of ram) and build a new machine around that. Do you think thats a good idea or is it better to just start from the ground up? If I can recycle the cpu do you have any recommendations for hardware around it? I mainly use unraid for plex, hosting some small private gameservers for me and a friend (sometimes modded mc which requires quite some ram) and for storage. I do like playing around with new stuff and im still fairly new.
August 3, 20241 yr Does the current I5-8500T fullfill your needs, and do you think it will do that in the future? If your current hardware is mostly idleing, then I dont see no need to upgrade? Ofcourse, with newer hardware you will likely see some reduced power draw, and thus save some money, but will it pay itself for new hardware? will an option like this fullfill your needs? https://www.aliexpress.com/w/wholesale-12-bay-hard-disk-cage.html?spm=a2g0o.productlist.auto_suggest.2.2891cVyZcVyZQ1 You can use your current server with an HBA, and then something like this to store the drives in. It wont be pretty, but hey - maybe now is the time when you need to buy that 42U rack and populate it with a few servers and 192 drives with 22TB?
