New UPS ? about slave setup

Featured Replies

Hey all,

I picked up a Smart 2200 and I /ve just installed it. With both my servers, my myth b/e master, 15" monitor, router and a bell sat rcvr more myth I have 40 Minutes left on the battery for run time. I have the master server setup to go std times before shutdown but at 40 Minutes left on the battery it will be a while waiting for the battery to get to 10%.

So I am wondering what the best setting for the master and then the slave machine may be. I also am gonna install the program on my myth master b/e machine as well which is myth 10.04 lts, should I leave tower as the master and let it control all the machines.

Thanks,

Dave

Best setting is what ever is best for you.  For example, if you have frequent mains failures of maybe an hour or so then choose a shorter run time before powering down so that there will generally be enough power left in reserve if the mains fails again before the batteries are recharged.  If they are frequent but very short (less than a minute long), you may choose to keep running for 10 minutes at least.  If mains failures are rare, then you can opt for a longer run time.  It also depends how important it is to you to keep things running before you are forced to shut things down.

For master-slave use the only real need is that the slave needs to be able to shut down before the master has lost access to the local network.  So if the master is set to 15 minutes, perhaps set the slave to 10.  I use 5 minutes and 2 minutes for master and slave in my set up, but then I don't have the kind of reserve that you have indicated.

Got it all setup including installing apcupsd and apcupsd-cgi on my myth b/e server. I a little gunshy about pulling the plug to test yet I will let the whole thing run overnight and see what the results are of the reports tomorrow. Man I lucked out, I got this ups for 150$. and it was the only one in the stack that would actually power on from the battery on the cart. I bought it right away. The battery date is 2010, finally luck ended up on my side for a change.

There are 5 more of the smart 2200's if anyone is interested. there is also a 1000 ($100$) There are no faceplates or cables and the 2200 are 5-20p the 100 is 5-15 and they are all rackmount, they all clicked when I put them into test mode.  They are freakin HEAVY, i pulled the batt out and installed mine in the rack this morning it was a task and they are 26.25" long. but how cool I have everything in my server room plugged into this thing and I am only loading it to 25% with a 40 minute run-time, best 150$ I ever spent, even if I have to buy a new batt module they are 399$ CDN brand new with a warranty.

rgds,

Dave
