Only 1 PCI slot for HBA and external JBOD

Featured Replies

I only have 1 PCI slot available and need to add a JBOD disk tray. I currently have a LSI 2008 with breakout cable controlling the 8 drives in my main server case. which is working fine. I am adding a JBOD disk tray and I will have to replace the current HBA card as I do not have any more PCI slots. My idea is to get a LSI 9300 16i and run 2 connectors with sata break out cables to internal drives, and 2 connectors to a internal-external adapter which then gives me 2 connectors to go to the JBOD disk shelf. Would this scenario work correctly? See attached kindergartener's drawing for a visualization.

That works, but assuming SATA drives in the JBOD, and no expander, total cable length should not be > 1 meter.

I agree with @JorgeB.

Depending on the jbod unit, you might have a few more options for connecting (exposes individual connections vs an expander for example).

Have you picked the unit? Can you share model info?

But if you connect 12disk then expabder can't avoid, two 8087 only support 8 disks.

Connect an expander allow far more cable length and eliminate unstable.

If only connect external disk directly, try not use any adaptor to ensure signal integrity. So recommend 8087 to SATA directly.

Yep, missed it was a 12 disk JBOD, in that case it should include a SAS expander.
