[Solved] Hard drive may be failing, but it passed the seagate diagnostic tool

Featured Replies

Hello, I'm running 5.0 beta14, and was sad to see my first red ball next to a drive.  It is a seagate 2TB drive, and is still under warranty.  While the SMART test seems to show a high number of Raw_Read_Error_Rate and Seek_Error_Rate, it still passed the seagate diagnostic that they make you run before you can RMA a drive.  Is my drive in fact dying?  Will seagate accept my RMA, or will they deny my claim?  Any experience is appreciated.

The SMART report looks fine. Rebuild the drive. Which PSU? How many drives?

I'm running a 6 drive array with a 380w antec earthwatts green PSU.

I'm hoping it was just a fluke then.  I haven't used the tower for the last 10 days, but I'll turn it back on and re-enable the drive, and report back.

The PSU supposedly has 17A on 2 12V rails.

That should be enough for 6 drives, however, if you see intermittent problems when the drives are spun down, then required to spin up, then it is the PSU.

You could be right on the edge, From what I saw in your syslogs, there is a mixture of 5400 and 7200, but this PSU may not handle the inrush required when a spin up is issued.

In comparison, I had a 500w seasonic with 18A on 2 12V rails handle 8 drives, but when the 9th drive was put in, I would get intermittent issues with one of the drives when required to spin up.

Comparing that to a Corsair 620HX, That has 2 rails, with supposed borrowing from the other rail.

It handles 17 drives, & 4 controllers without issue.

It's best to get a PSU with a single rail.

thanks.  I'll try swapping out the PSU for a 700w one

The wattage is not as important as the number of amps on a single 12V rail.
