Cannot Backup to Hidden Time Machine Share

I created a share with SMB set to Time Machine - hidden.  Although I could get the drive to mount in Mac Finder, and although Time Machine recognized it during the disc setup (and asked for my username/pw), it ultimately could not connect to the drive, issuing a notification that it was due to a username/password issue.  I went back and changed the share settings to Time Machine (not hidden), and it was then able to commence with the backup.  Bug?  Something else?  Thank you.
