replacing disk, array not going offline, cant switch off hardware

Featured Replies

i am following the manual to replace a 500gb hdd with a 2gb one, it says to stop array, when i do so it just sits...

Stop SMB...Spinning up all drives...Sync filesystems...Unmounting disks...Retry unmounting disk share(s)...Unmounting disks...Retry unmounting disk share(s)...Unmounting disks...Retry unmounting disk share(s)...Unmounting disks...Retry unmounting disk share(s)...Unmounting disks...Retry unmounting disk share(s)...

its just stuck in that state, so i go to switch off my proliant N40L with the power button but it will not power down, i have to hold it in to make it shut off (this cant be good), so continuing with the manual, i swap out the 500gb for the 2TB and power on, the manual says it should start rebuilding onto the new disk, its not, it just says disk4 not installed and the GUI locks up..i can still access tower:8080 though.

Did you stop all installed add-ons if any? If a file is open/accessed on any of the disks, the array wont stop. Allow it some time.

When you have shut it down and restart it has to rebuilt parity, if you have a parity disk. Its not good if you have switched disks before parity is rebuilt. Put the old 500 GB disk in again and see what happens.

I had left one slot free on the system. i moved all my data over and then added a 2tb drive for parity. i let this build and then run a check on it and it was fine. i followed the manual to replace the 500gb with another 2tb but it made no mention of closing apps, where do i do this ?

It has no way to know of any customizations and addons you have unstalled. All added applications with open files must be stopped.  Unraid will wait until they are.

so does that include someone on another pc on the network using say plex ??..is there a kill process or do i just manually go around shutting stuff down, i have SB installed, is closing down the web interface shutting it down ??, on my QNAP when i installed a package i had a logo on the admin pages of the QNAP, i could click it and select stop, i dont have this on UNraid with my SB install or SAB

Yes, someone on the network accessing the server can cause it to hang like this.  There is a kill command, but it is much better to just shut down Plex and anything else that may be accessing the server and let it shut down cleanly.  If you are still having issues, one easy solution is to unplug the server's network cable so that not network activity can prevent shutdown.
